Oldest Old Blue?

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, but that's still CH related.

Oldest Old Blue?

Post by sport! »

I read the other day that there are 4 British men left who fought in the First World War (all aged about 108 ish).

Is there any record of the oldest living Old Blue I wonder?

This is easier to follow than the one about an atheist union.

Oldest living Old Blues

Post by Rex »

The oldest male Old Blue is presumed to be Reg Abbott (TB 1912-18).

Gladys Engledow (2's 1915-22) reached 100 last year but it would be surprising if she were the only living ex-Hertford centenarian.

The oldest on Friends Reunited is Dorothy Appleton who left Hertford in 1924 which would make her 99.

Kathleen Stewart-Smith - Ffinch 1916 - 1924 Ward 4
At ninety eight Kathleen is enjoying her retirement in Surrey despite her failing sight and hearing.
Not quite the oldest but hanging in there.

Just come across Philip Mayne, who got a write up in the Spring 2005 Kings College Cambridge review, having completed 105 years. It says he missed his final term at CH because of the war, presumambly 1914 - 18
Peele A 1911 - 18

Just received a cutting from the Yorkshire Post which shows 2 of the WWI veterans meeting for the first time ever.
One of them is Philip Mayne, OB.
It also mentions that if he survives to be the last WWI to die, he may be buried in state, in memory of all his fallen colleagues.
