Any hint of alcohol was usually an expulsion order under the C.M.E. Seaman regime !

No discos or Grecians Club in my time!

When did the Grecians Club come into being?

I came down to an Old Blues Day c 1979 and a few of us had a pint there.

You didn't miss it by much! It was there in 1975, but I can't remember if that was the first or second year. I think it was located at the back of the dining hall off the road that led down to the station and post office. I do remember that the ration was two halves (I don't think you could order a pint...). It was one of those handful of groundbreaking developments that CH made over the years, you know, treating teenagers like young adults (I don't even recall any close supervision by staff), though if they don't have a licence any more it all becomes rather redundant...

The Grecians Club serves soft drinks, coffee etc a couple of nights a week I believe, and also is used for "Theme Nights" when Deps and Grecians are given alcohol ( no longer can they buy it there , of course) - rationed, but we all know there are ways around that!!

That's a shame. I was lucky as I had almost 2 years in the Grecians Club as my birthday was at the start of the school year. We could buy cider & lager and possibly bitter. Half a pint was 35p in chits  A pint 70p (obviously). I don't rememer anyone going there for soft drinks!

The year after you left... HPH being one of the originals who set it up!

It's a shame that the the licence was revoked but I think this is the same with every boarding school that had something similar...
