The CH website is definately different from a few weeks ago, more information, like I said and some links that said 'to be updated shortly' now have been. And I don't think they will be waiting for the 'flood of obscure questions' from me. I haven't emailed the school, I seem to be able to find out everything I need to know from here.

Actually, Mrs. C mentioned to me that the school had experienced a very large upsurge in interest after Rock School began. Hence lots of e-mails, I would imagine.

The picture of CH in the MasterPlan thread is excellent, it shows the layout of the school brilliantly. I can't believe it was designed and built as a school. Which brings me to my point -
Does anyone find it ironic that such a grand building was made for what was essentiallly the children of poor people. Surely, in those days the toffs and the rich never gave these people a second thought, let alone their children. They mustn't have even registered on the social scale back then, yet someone was prepared to educate them is such a building.

And while I'm here

When a person is first offered a place at CH do they get any say in which House they are placed, for example, could someone ask to be in the same House as a friend or is it a case of 'you get what you're given'?

Also, I know senior students have individual rooms but the younger ones share. Do students stay in the same rooms throughout school life or are they moved around occasionally?

In my day, no. I think it was exceptional that when I was in the Prep and about to go up to the senior school there were two numbers available in my new house and I was asked to make my choice; the other boy wasn't round at the time.

I got the feeling that they tried to keep siblings together; we had two Beares together even though they were in different years. I'm not sure if the two Hildrews were in the same house - Peter was in Thorn B but I don't know where Keith was.

In the Prep everything was based on house number; as no 51 out of about 60 I was always near the end of any queue. In senior school it went by year (ie more senior boys first) and within the year, alphabetical by name so numbers were not much used.

Don't forget that CH has always offered a very good education and as such many OBs have moved up in the world and are prepared to fund the institution that gave them their start.

The Victorians were great philanthropists and many CH children were 'deserving' poor, the children of C of E clergy or deceased Army officers.

Can anyone tell me what 'skiffage pie' is? How would you rate it, taste wise, also 'Housey stew', how was that?

I'll have a go, but it will be a bit long winded.
First of all it's a derogatory term for a pie of unidentifiable origin.
In the 60's, and long before I guess, we had to do trades at meal times.
Kiffage: serving tea (Kiff)
Skiffage: collecting the plates and shovelling all the left overs into tray.
Scavenging: cleaning the tables after the meal was finished.
Sometimes referd to as: Kiff Skiff and Scave

Hence sciffage pie was a suggestion that the cooks had recycled the remains left on peoples plates.
