We have had some gigs, common room annual dinner is often one of ours, smallish things through what was CHE etc....

I suppose this wouldn't be a bad place to plug the Jazz group Luke Allwood (the youngest of Peter's sons)(piano) and I lead, called 'Acoustic Bear' with Fergus Ireland (Mary Irelands son) on bass and Yuli Levtov, our drummer... don't ask about the name, one of those spur of the moment things....

We will play for next to nothing, getting double basses and drumkits around are always a problem...

I now feel old - I remember Luke Allwood coming into choir on my juniors (he must have been about 5!) and saying goodnight to his dad! (Luke was in his pyjamas!)

I know a trombonist(?) who runs an open mic night in leicester,
trombone-bass-drumkit jams are an experience..
he had to leave early last night though due to his girlfriend being in labour, he sacrificed the music for a baby

I thought it might be nice to represent myself on the site. I'm the drummer for aforemention Acoustic Bear.

I would like to think i take hold of most jazz orientated opportunities available at CH but can't help feeling (already taking into account what Old Blues have said about the relative (lack of) existence of jazz back in their day!), that there is definately space for more!

The theatre is an excellent facility which i don't feel we use enough, and for this, it is a great shame. Maybe we should resurrect the idea of simply taking control of this fantastic stage, and hosting a concert of "unofficial" school talent (for want of a better word) for other people to enjoy, maybe even for the public, where, after reading this forum, i feel there would definately be support...

Well, that's what the theatre's for, isn't it?

We managed to fill the place for two consecutive evenings - a Friday night gig for pupils followed by a Saturday evening one on Parents Day. We were only going to do the Saturday, but the demand for tickets meant that we had to sweet-talk the Drama Dept. into moving some rehearsal they had planned for the Friday so that we could use the Theatre.

We were 'unofficial' as you put it, and it certainly worked well for us.

Judging by the lively and vociferous response from other pupils last Friday, I imagine that you would get good support from within the school itself although I can imagine that parents, Old Blues etc. would also be happy to come and see what's going on.

When I was lower down the food chain at C.H., I remember various school rock bands putting on shows as well. These were always good.

There are reviews of some of these events in old copies of The Blue.

Go for it, and take advantage of those facilities while you have the chance.

I think it's time for you guys to use your initiative and try and book the octagon or the theatre for an evening - even a Sunday afternoon...

Listening to the CD that came with the Blue yesterday - I can certainly say the standard of music is very high!

Definately. We shall start working on the idea seriously soon.

Jazz at CH? Should have seen the line up last year - still not that strong on brass (Titchner normally fixes that), but drummer (Maddren) not tooo bad I must say. Katie C pretty good...the level over all was high. Beans, I hope you are holding up ok there.
I actually sucked at jazz/Big Band - just wimped out under Sam...saying that, I have just finished the last night of a Jazz musical I have been playing in London. As soon as I left CH I learn how to impro and hey presto! its not too hard.
Anyway, hope all is goin well. Yuli, keep it up.

I really like the sound of the trombone in jazz, its really rich.. Big band stuff especially.

Angus used to play bass clarinet in Band on his 2nd/3rd form. He was pretty good even then. We used to have quite a laugh in the Band, although the last time I saw him was when we did a Band CD under Michael Davison (we were part of a handful of old Blues who were invited to play).

Would this be the guy who played a solo piece at the Bluecoat Concert? (Sorry, don't have the programme to hand an I can't remember his name...). If so, he is very good. I was with another O.B. trombonist who was equally impressed.

Yeah, Gabriel Eve is the guy you want.

He is very good, not sure that he's a jazzer though... But he does have the potential to be a killing player if he wants to be.

Hi Michael,

Yes, I'll be there, along with a few others from this forum and other Old Blues as well.

Will C.H. have any 'official' involvement in the service?

Yes,

Some form of brass band (maybe the trombone choir) will be playing i gather, don't know if the current bandmaster will be coming or not..

I suppose this is the only official item, although i would like to take the band and do Sussex and his other favourites...
