Thank you again, all, for your kind messages! No, Katharine.. I had not announced my disaster on the Forum (not much point really!), but various members of the Advisory Board knew of it and have been very supportive.
I will be glad when it's all over!
In the meantime, the wine is going down very well tonight (together with the Chinese Take Away!)
Love - and repeated thanks - to everyone..................

Hope you get the house sorted asap. Dare I ask what happened?

And good luck with the house-mending. We had a minor flood a month before we got married. A small amount of water really, but a fair amount of damage to the house. And my nerves! I sympathise with you.

Thanks again, everyone! A tiny little bleeder pipe, off the main pipe from the tank in the roof to the hot tank in the airing cupboard, decided to blow off its washer and nut (the scary thing is that no-one can tell me WHY). I am fortunate a) that I was here and discovered it after approximately 2 hours of main water starting to cascade down through my house and finding an outlet through the kitchen light fittings; b) that my neighbour turned off the mains within minutes of my waking him up, and drained down the tanks etc; c) that damage upstairs is minimal, though for the 10p cost of a new washer to that pipe, there are thousands of pounds worth of damage downstairs; d) that the insurers sent an emergency plumber and Loss Adjuster out at 4.30 a.m. on a Sunday, so the overall damage was contained; e) that I had not gone to work just as the pipe 'blew' because if I had, I would have returned to a house full of water and - probably - three drowned animals.
So although life is pretty ghastly, it could have been much worse. Someone was looking out for me........

My parents had a similar thing happen back in the summer. My dad noticed water dripping onto my old bed so went up to the loft to have a look and fell through the ceiling. Turns out there was a pin sized hole in the pipe leading to the shower which they never use. Considering he is in his 70's he was bl**dy lucky as he landed mostly on the bed.

OUCH! Poor father! Hope the pin sized hole is now repaired and all has dried out and been replaced.
At least I didn't fall anywhere, though I did get Very Wet crawling under the waterfall to get to the main stopcock in my kitchen.

The hole was repaired the same day & a new ceiling put in a few weeks after. The bonus was that the room needed decorating so it now looks nice and as it's my eldests room there she chose the colour!
Got visions of you crawling on the kitchen floor now

It's also what a cockney copper shouts at a fleeing villain.

Belated birthday greetings Kerren
And best wishes for a drier rest of the year..!!
This time last year I had a small floode - (diliberate e there) the local housing for disableds (or dis abused as I call them) ripped out my en-suite and replaced it with a wet room - wonderful - except the 1st time I used it at 11pm I discovered that the water didn't go DOWN the outlet.... so it found a new route - my bedroom floor, onto the landing, along a joist and down into the kitchen... only a showerful of H2O but what a mistaka to makea! The repairs were as bad as having the entire room redone as they had to pull up all of the floor that had been sealed down to pull up the floorboards to get to the down pipe to determine that the plumber had pushed the down pipe as far into the main downpipe hence the water coundn't flow out as it was against the inside of the downpipe - this is confusing!
I have a stopcock under the sink - however i have to go all the way down my drive (which Mary will remember is a LONG one) and work out which of the 4 in a square belongs to me to lift the rusted plate and turn off the water meter as well! Argh!

Kerren - I missed it. I am SO sorry. What's it like being 40? I can't remember!
