There was (and may still be!) an official signpost in a carpark in Torquay saying PEDESTRAINS - a bit difficult to alter that one!

We've been out on a little bank holiday jaunt and passed a professionally produced sign in Roborough (just outside Plymouth) advertising

strawberrie's.

I also remember seeing a sign at a farmshop "Tom`s and fresh collie`s".
I`ve also seen "assorted gateaux`s" on a restaurant menu.

I don't know whether it is an urban myth or not, but the greengrocer's apostrophe is supposed to increase sales. Presumably irate customers see something they want to buy when they go in to complain!

On a similar vein, but NOT spelling or punctuation, there use to be a sign at a small-holding on the A.24, just outside Horsham on the way to Dorking.

It was in amongst the others advertising cabbages, potatoes etc.

"D.I.Y. MANURE."

I must admit it made my mind boggle somewhat !

There's a sign advertising "Manuare" outside a farm a mile or so from here. And it's been there for years (the sign that is).

Alovely one on Radio4 PM today. There was a piece about the RSPB alledgedly banning the word Cock, as in cock blackbird. A spokeswoman said this wasn't really so, that the electronic monitor had replaced the word with ****. As soon as it was brought to their attention, they had deleted it from the dictionary used by the machine, so there would be no more "Asterixes". She said that at least 3 times. That little Gaul does get about.

Very funny Maggie!

Very recently in a Kent local free paper was a letter of protest (I've chucked the paper now) from a woman complaining of a neighbour who was keeping poultry. It complained "and his cock wakes me every morning at dawn..."

Headline on a local paper billboard today.

"Samaritan saves women's life"

It was one woman by the way. A council employee found a woman slumped in her car with an empty tabket bottle beside her.

I've never known -

Just seen mens' shaving ad on box. Should he be trimming "sideboards" or "sideburns"?
