Nicely done, Josh - but why did you start with the last verse rather than the first - or was it the easiest ?
I can't scan it to the tune, either - pity, would have been fun ( although the original words are splendid, you will admit).

Admit? You make it sound like I don't want to agree!

Yep, I have to confess, I started with the last because I thought it would be easiest. Though that's not quite true; more to say I had gotten stuck on verse one (no dictionary or Kennedy to hand), and thought, right, let's hit verse 4.

It is a shame that it doesn't fit the tune...though it does make a great email signature!

Please do me a favour Josh, and check when was Kennedy first published. I presume it is Kennedy's Latin Primer you mean. We were sure our copies were pre- First World War when we were at school!

I had a look when I got it; I'm pretty sure it's 1930, though don't bet money on it just on my account. I'll double-check later.

Er?
I thought that Latin went out with the great plague so what if Kennedy (and what is that in Latin) was 1904 or 1930? Anything after 1553 should do?

Kennedy Revised Latin Primer 1888
On a Yahoo search there is a piece about s*x in Kennedy, which might be of some interest?

MAGGIE?
What is the Latin for the 'dirty word' even in the 1880's.....
Can anyone remember how Queenie Blench dealt with this? Kennedy was certainly a fundamental text....
Kerren

(I remember how our Biology teacher dealt with it. The relevant bits about e.g. rabbit reproduction were cut out of our text books.....)

Barbara, Barbara, please take pity on us (even if we don't deserve it) and give us a translation.

Pretty please :) :) :) :)

Here's the translation, for those who haven't gotten it yet:

Brothers, best with righteous living
Shall our grateful thanks be paid,
Lifting up with hearts forgiving
Holy prayer in duty made.
Praise we thus the God of Heaven,
Christ our saviour and our Host,
With the Lord of Spirits seven,
Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

NOBODY
has answered my question. What (in Latin or any other terms) is the difference between the 'Carmen' (Hertford) and the 'Votum' (Horsham), beyond the addition of a particular verse for Hertford (about girls in gymnslips, if I recall....) :? :?

Hi Kerren

Please don't take it personally. I asked the same question some time ago. Still waiting for a reply.

Glad to see that I hadn't forgotten everything that Queenie taught me, although your version scans somewhat better than my translation
