In that case its 90% cottage pie with a little bit of shepherd added (leftovers what can you do)!! Either way I'm immensly proud and in a fit of madness told my tutor I was going to make her one as a thankyou gift!

One issue would be where's the ice pick (had an ice house and a larder when I werra nippa) and if there's no fridge there may also be no combustion engine so how's the lime going to get here for the gin?Any critics: next time you look in your fridge, think what you couldn't have if you didn't have one. It's not that hard to do.

Re: Food glorious food
I do appreciate the input on this 100%, thanks. I take the advice on the other types of sauces and the water/cloth method of keeping milk cool, and the many other thoughts.
I have lived in student accommodation for several years. Several of the places have lacked a particular fundamental component but I have been easily able to work around it up until now: when there was no oven, I learned to cook. When there was no freezer, it was no big deal because anything for the freezer can be kept in the fridge for a little while. But I do disagree that I am making too big a deal of it - the choice is extremely limited because of not having a fridge and it does have health impacts because of not eating enough and/or having an unbalanced and unvaried diet.
My response to the responses about looking in the fridge and imagining what you wouldn't have...my average fridge is usually fairly well-stocked: milk, lots of cheese, butter, ham or some other meat, juice or some other cold drink (I know it's not essential for that to be in the fridge), eggs (again I know it's not essential for them to be in the fridge), lots of vegetables, some bowls of stuff from tins that I didn't finish the day before, e.g. sweetcorn etc. Then in the freezer there might be a pizza, some fish fingers, chips, meat for long-term storage, things like that, depending on the size of the freezer available of course. Having experienced this change in nutritional lifestyle I for one will most certainly take as much advantage as possible from refigeration in future and strongly advise anyone from choosing accommodation without it!
I hope I will never again be in the position to necessitate it - but nevertheless thank you very much for those suggestions about keeping milk and things cool. Yes, there are all the different types of milk in Italy, but the problem is that the coolest place in my room is probably about 15-20 degrees, as the weather's getting very nice now.

Re: Food glorious food
I thought these days eggs weren't sposed to be in the fridge as it can give you bird flu or something!

Bird flu is a virus / bacteria. Fridges and other inanimate objects cannot supply it and nor can they remove it - it is a case that if you have a filthy fridge then you are at risk of all sorts of nasties.Laura M wrote:I thought these days eggs weren't sposed to be in the fridge as it can give you bird flu or something!
Donn't know about keeping eggs in/out of a frisge - we keep ours (UK and France) in the fridge. More important is to store them pointy end up (?) though we don't bother
Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

Yet some other 'experts' say eggs should NOT be stored in a fridge, but in a cool place.

Just goes to show what the eggsperts know...
Re: Food glorious food
In my eggsperience they should be stored in a fridge if possible. But then I don't know the real answer.
These tasty people should know for sure though:
