Option is the key to the left of the left Apple key on most Apple keyboards. It's usually labelled with the word 'option' or the symbol '⌥'. You may also have a second Option key on the other side of your keyboard.

Thanks Matthew, that's great for all except grave. I can now do é, ü, ñ, î - the circumflex is needed for Welsh so that may be useful. However my grandson's name has a grave accent and I haven't found that backtick - yet!

If you look in character map you can assign your own shortcut keys, eg I have Ctrl+| to make a star (from Windings I think). Incidentally Webdings has some really cute mini images to play with.

2 days later - but not all spent at the computer! I can now do my grandson's name correctly as Seòl. It should be pronounced almost like shawl but he is usually called Shawlie.
