I had some friends who lived in Muswell Hill, round the corner from Elms Lane. This was regularly annotated with a couple of additional strokes of the pen into Bums Lane (it works better in caps).

Then there is the regulary defaced sign, with one letter added.

A couple more, on this Topic --- When I was at CH, chaps were amused by the sign in Lewes of "Lewes Women's Institute "
A better one, was, in my last posting in the Army, we were close to a Welsh village called "Knockin" which had a sign ---- I kid you not -------- Knockin Shop
To quote the "League of Gentlemen" -------- Very LOCAL !

It's risen to the surface of my memory -

It was an odd News item some time ago. Maybe in the Manchester area? An industrialist had constructed a row of model dwellings for his employees which had plumbing - maybe even inside loos? Possibly c1890s? My knowledge of the history of plumbing is a bit hazy.

The row of houses was called "Sanitary Street". This must have sounded a bit cringeworthy as the years rolled on, and the locals amended the name to "Anita Street".

Understandable, really!
