Did your father and his sister, your aunt, go to live with their mother when she went to live with her brother-in-law? Or did they stay in the Greenwich Home? I'm just trying to work out what relation they would have been to the two children of the brother-in-law relationship... a mixture of half sibling and half cousin? Was there a brother-in-law's wife?

Back to Fiona Bruce.. there was an article about this programme in last week's Sunday Times (I only read it yesterday). She has discovered a totally unscrupluous charlatan in her great grandfather. Oh goodness. I wonder if he was the CH connection.....

I am one half Irish, one quarter Scot and one quarter Wiltshire.
The Irish bit has been the most interesting, I remember my Irish Grandmother speaking of her Husbands Grandmother in lowered tones ----- I wish I could find a lower case for this---- sh.ws.nt Irs ! Even as a child, I found this hilarious, and of latter years, I found that she came from--- LVRPL ! Oh shock and horror !
My Elder Grand-daughter was the first, surviving Girl to be born in the Family for over 150 years (As far back as I can trace, and Family Legend) ---- Now 35, Black Run Skier, at 12, Architect Partner, ------ One mustn't have Favourites, BUT------
By the way, only an Irishman could be called Evans--- and be Irish ! I think we must have drifted over in a coracle ! I assume the "Drink" is the correct one !

There were a couple of younger ones in the home I believe, and they went to live with their mother, but my father certainly didn't as he was appretenticed to a tailor from the Home, hated it, lied about his age and joined the army shortly before WW1. As far as I know there was no brother-in law's wife, and after the war, when my parents married, the inlaws lived with them. My Granny died when I was very young, and I don't really remember her, but I certainly remember the man i called Grandad. WE must have been a bit crowded 2 bedrooms, parents in one, my sister and I in the other, Grandparents living in one room downstairs.

My Dad was keen on politics and eventually got himself elected as one of the £Guardians of the Poor", helping to administer the Poor Law, and making regular supervisory visits to the Sidcup Homes which were still administered by Greenwich council.
Unfortunately Dad told slightly different versions of events to my sister and me, which has led to considerable confusion.

Beware of assuming surnames are an indication of where you came from.
I met a girl on a CIIR orientation course called Gwyneth Reynolds, all the way from Glasgow where she had lived all her life.
BTW, where are the Greenwich Homes in Sidcup? I am from that area, used to take my sister to Ballet school in Sidcup, took my mother to the hospital in Sidcup, but have never heard of them.
I believe it may have been also known as the Hollies, which I do know.

Snap! My father joined the British Army in 1913, aged 15. He signed up for 5 years.

Taken from brief History of the Hollies and Lamorbey Children’s Home.

The home was originally called The Greenwich Children’s Home Burnt Oak Lane Sidcup Kent before being taken over from Greenwich Board of Guardians in 1930 renamed Sidcup Residential School but in July 1930 it was again renamed Lamorbey Residential School.

We used to go swimming at Lamorbey Swimming pool next door.

That was where my Dad learned to swim. They used to dive through hoops, if there were enough people about, to throw money to them!

Now I wonder why it seems to be females who don't like FB ...
