I absolutely agree with you Angela. My bedroom isn't pretty or possibly even tasteful, but I know what I like and what I don't like, and the dark paint that was on when we moved in just thoroughly depressed me. It's a large room, and the previous owners obviously agreed with the maxim that large rooms can take darker tones. I've never agreed with that - to me it just seems like even bigger expanses of darkness and depression. Whereas the same dark terracotta shade in the tiny downstairs cloakroom looks quite cosy.
In addition, our bedroom is north facing so doesn't even get lots of cheery sunlight to brighten it up. So we painted it a nice bright sunny yellow, and it made all the difference, for me at least. Normally I wouldn't dream of imposing my will on Chris - household decor is a joint decision - but this was one occasion where I was absolutely determined that the decor was going to be changed because it really affected my mood.

Re: Slaves to Decoration
When we moved here I refused to sleep in the "main" bedroom. The ceiling and carpet were rich pink, and the walls maroon. I felt like a slice of bread with jam on all sides. The ceiling had also been artexed by an amateur, with great lumps of the stuff all over the place. The addition of tiles and white paint made a world of difference, and I was content to live in it as the other rooms had a more pressing need for redecoration. The room was eventually done in a restful shade of green.

Update ! ----- The upstairs Bathroom is now a fetching shade of light green !
BUT --- TBA has now decided that the Toilet, which adjoins it, is papered.
There is nothing wrong with the paper --- but it don't MATCH !
In my ignorance I enquired (Tentatively) if seperate rooms had to match ?
"Well I don't like it !" ---------- end of discussion. ------- I shal sulk !
