Re: Rumours of my demise are..........
I've signed up for the annual flu jab which comes free at the University where I work. The jab will be in October but it has been made clear that it will not cover us for Swine Flu. Ho Hum.
In the meantime two of our students have claimed mitigation from missing their resits in August, because of Swine Flu. I met one of them yesterday (these two students cohabit) and he said that he went to the gym one night, came home feeling like death, and genuinely thought over the next 10 days that he would not make it. His partner was similarly ill for 8 days. OOh dear. They both signed up to the Pandemic Website and received Tamiflu but wonder if that was a good idea. Apparently it started because his partner had a cousin who had recently returned from USA and had been taken ill when they returned to the UK.
On Neill's advice, where do we go from here? I personally am keeping my hands etc. swabbed with antiseptic stuff every time they touch a public surface like a taxi door handle , door frame, etc., but maybe I am being paranoid?

Re: Rumours of my demise are..........
Perhaps this would be a good year to revert to my old habit of hibernating. Apparently my sister, who is on chemotherapy, has put a bottle of gel at the front door and nobody is allowed into the house unless they use it. I haven't dared to ask whether they have yet managed to train their dog to use it! My husband gets flu jabs because he is diabetic, but I won't qualify for another 9 months. Fortunately I very rarely pick up colds or flu (probably because I tend to be anti-social?), but this year was definitely an exception when I returned from Finland with an absolute stinker, which I still have my doubts about.

Frances --- I'm surprised that your Husband won't qualify for Flu Jab, for another 9 months.
TBA and I are both long-term Type 1 Diabetics ( Politically correct term is now "Persons with Diabetes" ------ I ask you -- Ridiculous !)
We get a notification from our GP in about October --- just pre- the usual Flue time.
9 months from now would take your Husband to June 2010 -- seems a bit poinless !
If I were so notified, I would be challenging it with Diabetes UK and the GP -----but it is, of course, up to you.
But then I am "Notorious" !

Neill - I think you have misread my post; my husband gets flu jabs because he is diabetic. I don't, although I am older than he is, because I have to wait until I am 65 to qualify ie May 2010. Not that it would make any difference since the standard flu vaccine is not effective against the current Swine Flu. Meanwhile I'll just stick to being anti-social!

Our GP's surgery must be allocated oodles of vaccine, coz they advertise it free on the surgery door to anyone who doesn't qualify on age/health grounds after they have vaccinated the 'at-risk' people !

Frances --- my apologies -- I missed the "I" !
If you have to wait until you are 65 --- that must be another 30 years !
(You would never guess I was in Politics !! )

Neill - they say that flattery will get you anywhere; however it might just confuse my daughters who would both be older than me (or, for the pedants, older than I!)

We have just returned from SW France, camping (No jokes please !) with our Tent.
TBA being an Ex-nurse, was worried about all whom we met, or were near, who sneezed or coughed.
Actually, I believe that the major danger of yer actual Flu, is on air-conditioned Airplanes, Ferries, and the like !
We travelled 100 miles, in each direction to get to the Chateau at Croixelles, which produces our favourite Red, in the Madiran Area, and got 5 cases ----- at 17 euros each ! can't be bad, but of course it is always cheaper buying from the producer !

Re: Rumours of my demise are..........
A friend of mine here in Turku is in her mid fifties and very fit & healthy.... while rummaging round a closing down sale in a shoe shop the smell (and possibly dust) made her sneeze four times in a row.... a woman standing nearby threw up her hands in horror and started screaming -"swine flu, get away!"... methinks that paranoia has set in!!

H'm - I wonder what the Finnish is for 'swine flu' - probably something totally unpronounceable! and has this anything to do with the fact that Maria (in Finland) had a stinking cold last week and her sister (in Aylesbury) had it a few days later? Perhaps Skype is a new method of spreading the virus!!? Coincidentally Maria, with the birth of Kirri's baby, has taken on the title of 'Aunty Piglet' - don't ask, but Kirri has always been 'Aunty Tigger' to Maria's children.

Sikainfluenssa
Sika = Pig
Influenssa = flu!
AND I DON'T HAVE IT! It's just a cold!
" As the two friends wandered through the snow on their way home, Piglet grinned to himself, thinking how lucky he was to have a best friend like Pooh.
Pooh though to himself; "If the pig sneezes, he's f***ing dead!""
