I have heard it rumoured that under a new Children's Act now in course of preparation, all parents will have to be CRB checked if they wish to look after their own children.

Presumably, any offspring of parents who have not been checked prior to the birth of any child, will immediately be placed on the at risk register and closely supervised by unmarried social services personnel

Quite correct, Frances.

HOWEVER, The worrying aspect of all this, I'm told by people in the business of Child Protection, is the very high percentage of child-abuse cases committed by distant relatives !

Were you by any chance born with a wooden spoon in your hand?

No - maybe a silver spoon in my mouth!

..........but it always intrigues me that, even in my own family, the only people who know how to bring up children never seem to have any of their own. Those of us who do, never claim to have all the answers - we just sort of muddle through as best we can.

Oh Dear Lord, I'm hyperventilating in the wake of drinking an overstrength coffee (Note to self: use a teaspoon to dispense granules into cup. Pouring in a dollop of random size is not good for your kidneys).

Firstly, I absolutely agree with Dave's comment above. My gay brother being a prime example. And don't even get me started on pony club mothers who have never ridden a horse (or pony) but know exactly what everyone else's kids are doing wrong (starting with choosing me as a mother).

Oh, that's better. Just had a quick breathe into a brown paper bag.

Now, where was I?

Oh yes: when is this lunacy going to stop? Can it be stopped? What can WE do to stop it?

I'm going to attack the waist high weeds in the front garden to make myself feel better.

It's a pity you are so far away - I have shoulder-high nettles in my back garden which I would happily allow you to attack in the interests of lowering your blood pressure!

What a coincidence! I've carried a brown paper bag around with me for the last 44 years! Not the same one, of course
I have a collection of them - my insurance policy against making an exhibition of myself. It seems to work. Thank you, A & E sister at St. Thomas's Hospital, c.1965!

Does this mean that my daughter, who sometimes has her friend's 10 year-old son round for the day in the school hols, when said friend can't get time off work, is acting illegally? :? She has been CRB checked in connection with the RSPB Kids group she runs - but she's not registered with Ofsted as a child-minder  Her friend reciprocates when she can by having my 10 year-old grandson, but she's not registered either. Oh dear, what a minefield!

You have to have a seperate CRB check for each activity you are involved in.

There are 3 levels, (I think), of check. A bit of a money-spinner, given their apparent in-effectiveness.

I'm CRB checked for youth football.

Now here's the latest madness. If your son plays youth-football and for whatever reason, you can't take him to the match but a friend whose son is playing offers YOUR son a lift. He/she must now be CRB checked.

It is now illegal, (technically) to take photo's at kids matches without the Club's and ALL the parents consent.

Technially, plod could have a field-day with my hard drive.

I would pull them with glee: we don't have a very good crop, and I like to dry them for the horses (makes their coats all nice and shiny :) ).

Invest in a goat !

They love 'em !
But not as much as they love the neighbours roses, the washing, climbing the apricot tree to get to the very last of the fruit that I thought was safely out of their reach ..............................

My mother used to mutter things about keeping Khaki Campbell ducks to keep down the grass and weeds, with the added bonus of providing eggs. I doubt if either ducks or a goat would be able to distinguish between weeds and herbs, and both would require looking after, not to mention having to start by mending a few fences. Oh well, the weeds can stay for now.

My late Father bought a Goat to keep the grass down, in the Orchard.
He was named Boris (The Goat !) and we were informed that he had been "Gilded" so we expected a sort of "Golden Fleece " effect.
Boris was not fond of grass --- but loved stripping tree bark --- in an Orchard !--- He believed that he was not a Goat , but People, and had to be put to bed every night , with soothing words, or he would bleat for hours ! I used to take him for walks, on a lead, like a dog, and when let off, he would charge about the field, and then charge at me --- swerving at the last possible moment !
Eventually, we gave him to a children's zoo in Hayling Island, where I am sure he was happy.
Don't buy a Goat ---- get a Mower !!
But you will love a Goat more !!!
