I didn't say alternative was wrong, an orthopedic consultant said I shouldn't be walking, let alone working after looking at my spine x-rays (I had chiropractic) but until there is objective proof I put homeopathy alongside Philippine psychic surgery.

Actually Andrew Wakefield was done down by the way he did it (taking blood at his sons birthday party for one) more than by what he said.

The power of the mind is very strong as Caroline said, and also you are what you eat (have had proof of that too) or smell if you like Liz, but some things can harm you, many essential oils for example should not be used while pregnant, and even too much water can kill.

Include amongst "some things which can harm you" drugs both prescription and over-the-counter.

Any medical procedure carries a degree of risk about which patients - or the parents of patients - are not always fully informed.

When the patients are babies/small children - or animals - who have no say in their own care - it behoves us to become as informed as possible, and put not too much trust in Big Pharma, which is essentially profit-driven. If we all took responsibility for our own care the health industry (or should that be sickness industry?) would be seriously under-employed.

I am fortunate to have as a good friend a certain Catherine O'Driscoll. Her book "What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccinations" has many parallels in human medical care and is an impressively well-researched and disturbing read. Catherine first mentioned Wakefield's work many years ago! I had never heard of him...

P.S. Laura gets married this July and I need a hat.....!

I think this is the piece that Liz meant.
To back what Liz has written elsewhere I see several headlines:
the US courts have found a connection in one case sufficient to pay compensation. In that case it seems (unproven) to be a result of the mercury in the injection. Other cases are under investigation
Japan has actively banned MMR
There have been several cases where people who have had two doses have actually contracted and passed on mumps from the jab

........................................
Separately, homeopathy is allowed freely in France and chemists hold stocks. After an accident and fracture my wife was prescribed arnica which reduces bruising. Decades ago in Southampton Chest Hospital I had pills which made bruises disappear in about 3 days - very effective but I don't know what the little blue pills were.
I also had alternative medicine about 40 years ago for a bone problem - osteocrondosis* - which was very effective.

* that is what the doctor caled it though it does not correspond with the current text books; bones were not connecting together as I got older

Very true; aspirin was widely prescribed but now dangers are appreciated. Ditto paracetomol
Thalidomide caused all sorts of problems when used during pregnancy, was withdrawn and is now being used again but for a different complaint!

When I look at the list of problems with all the drugs I take ....... to overcome one such I take anti-malaria tablets whilst another hides the pain of crepitation between my bones!

I'm late to this debate but I would say two things, irrespective of the debate over the efficacy or otherwise of the MMR vaccination :-
a) my dog (after I had inherited her from a so-called 'friend') was diagnosed with epilepsy and put on traditional medication - phenobarbitol - by the local vet. Her personality changed overnight, she became clingy, fearful and, even worse, incontinent. My own bed was soaked, so was hers, so were the carpets etc. So-called friends talked of euthanasia. I resisted...... The vet said that the incontinence was because she had been spayed -but I knew that that had been done some years previously, long before she had come to live with me. In desperation I took her to a homeopathic vet, 1.5 hours drive away, but where an Old Blue friend works. We weaned her (the dog) off the phenobarbitol and put her onto homeopathic remedies. I don't know how it works, but five years later, her fits are few and far between (and when they happen, they are very mild), and from day 1 there was no longer any problem with incontinence. Willow sends love to Ruby and to you, Liz!

b) Jo's posting about her father and his diet made me think of the no-no foods which I have avoided for years, since I was diagnosed arthritic. Anything acidic... includes citrus fruit, tomatoes, strawberries - also red meat, dairy products, caffeine. Who knows whether, given that I am crocked up enough, I would be worse off if I had not eschewed such things?

On a human scale prescribed medicines can be as bad. My wife's boss (who was always fussy) went "mental" after he retired and was put on stronger and stronger medicines, longer and longer stays in mental hospitals, the lot for about 9 years. He couldn't bear to meet anyone, go out of the house, talk on the phone and shuffled around like a 99 year old. One day (and he told me the actual date) he simply stopped taking all medicines, stopped drinking and started walking for exercise. Within three months he went abroad on holiday and hasn't looked back. He is now just like he was when I knew him 12 years ago.

Medicines do not always work and often have side effects which can be positive or negative.
