As far as I remember, the first verse went something like this. Apologies for incorrect latin spelling. Can anyone fill in the gaps ??

Unum contentum solite
Laeto sodales sono
Et voto christo fundite
Nostrae domus patrono
Et per priora secula
.. .. ...... quot quot vestis
Et ... ..... ..... .... .... .... ...
Caeruliaeque vestis.

May not be perfect but not bad 27 years after leaving CH !!

(After all that effort I feel the need to open a bottle of vin - don't tell the missus)

No! no! You can do better than that!

50 - yes 50!! - years after leaving, I can say with near certainty that you have started the second verse before you have finished the first!! Let's try! I am fully sober now.

Unum concentum tollite (NB spelling of concentum - different word!)
Laeto sodales sono
Et vota (?) Christo fundite
Nostrae Domus patrono.
Nostro favete carmini
Amici quotquot estis (so ugly i used to think - so lacking in euphony)
Quos cura tangit hospiti
Caeruliaeque Vestis.

Ut per priora saecula (NB "ut" - mark well the ut)
Sic tempus in futurum
di dah di dah di gaudia
Et scriptus adjuturum ...... (Doesn't seem to agree somehow - the endings, I mean!)

Oh dear! stuck!!!!

Tried to sing it with Roff Rayner (Col B 39-47 ish) then Cornwall's Secretary for Education. We were on one of the old Uganda educational cruises about 35 years ago and found ourselves together at the top of the lLeaning Tower of Pisa, no less. It seemed appropriate at thetime to give a lusty rendering of the Votum, but I have to say that our combined memories served us little better then and it quickly petered out in a rather pathetic manner.

However, I think I can still render the Foundation hymn in full! Of course, the language is somewhat more accessible.

NB It was Roff Rayner and myself who brought Lib Dem success to Cornwall this year. (See earlier posting)

It's much better when the band play it! :)

On top of the Leaning Tower? Not allowed - it would fall over and you would definitely get a red card for that Mr Plum!

Well, not when it's played up there then! ;)

Aha! and now we have it! Mr Geraint Jennings (a member of this forum?) has it in full (together with a translation - how useful!) on this site:

http://user.itl.net/~geraint/christshospital.html

But you must not cheat and look at it before you have cudgeled your memory cells on here! Who can get furthest with remembering our school song? I think we have a right to know! .... and I am sure that Julian would be prepared to offer a small prize - say a kiff bowl full of Housey Ale - for the best effort on the forum. After all, it is our very own school song.

isn't there a line somewhere further on which is something like:

et recta disciplina

which must surely mean and discpline backsides...

no - it means being regular. Matron would give cascara to those in difficulties

Oh well, nothing like a regular rhythm! :)

What makes you think I regularly talk to my wife about CH? She has been there once on a visit and was sufficiently impressed that she is willing to contemplate CH for our daughter's education. As a routine subject of conversation, however, it probably comes up about once or twice a year, and probably only then because my recently acquired step-siblings are both Old Blues. I appreciate the benefits that I gained from a Housey education and genuinely enjoyed my time there. I also enjoy contributing to this website but surely schooldays are but one aspect of life - soon over and never more than a stepping-stone to better things?

I'm meeting up with and Old Blue mate for a few drinks on Sunday - don't think we'll be singing any Victorian songs, though......

Actually, Loringa's right. Schooldays aren't a regular topic of conversation, and I'm sure the funny looks WOULD start if my wife found me wandering around singing songs in Latin......

.......... and there was little me thinking Latin was a dead language !

Well it certainly was as far as I was concerned after three terms with Mr Gregory in Prep School. I still blame his st st st stutter.....

JR you refer to latin with Basil Gregory in the Prep.

Were you ever at the wrong end of a gym shoe wielded by him?
