Letter to the headmaster- re abuse cases. CH

Dear Robert, I read your letter to Simon Reid regarding the abuse cases and CH responsibility. This particular paragraph interested me a lot and brought back bad memories- ‘Whilst the school has changed it must answer the questions of the past and in fairness, Simon, you were there as a Housemaster when one of the perpetrators was committing some of the very worst abuse. It is no longer enough for former teachers to plead ignorance – Mr Martin provided the evidence of the Common Room. People knew but they remained silent whilst the lives of young and vulnerable children were damaged, and in some cases, destroyed.’
I was a teacher at CH for 30 years . I started in 1994. I lived in Middleton back flats next door to Simon Reid when he was housemaster. Dobbie lived next door in mid A . I reported to Simon several times my concerns about what was going on in Dobbies flat. I reported the same to my head of dept.Mike O’Conner - the answer I got was ‘ that’s just Gary. I could see students leaving at 2 or 3 in the morning worse for wear. Constantly. Practically every weekend. No on wanted to listen to me. Reid’s wall and balcony were attached to dobbies- he must have known because I knew something dubious was going on- no whistleblowing in those days. If you need me to make a statement I would.

Absolutely dreadful that nobody appeared willing to listen to your concerns.
