Her need was not great enough.

The staff are very lucky she is not there, defiant is definitely the word.

Actually, and if we are being pedantic here, only a colon would be correct, not a comma, as the following words are an invitation to appraisal ( yes, Miss Morrison, I did listen in class ...! I still shudder at the widespread American " different than...")

I think it should be a colon, but I only got a C for O'Level (modern day equivalent)
