Brilliant ! in many ways,--- I shall attempt to get my Wife to translate some of the Thai words ----She speaks Thai, having spent 5 years on the Burma Border-- Just in case it implies that you have agreed, under solemn oath to feed the entire village for a month !
If, as , and when, you return to England, you will find that the Service in ANY Thai restaurant will be superb --- although it usually involves the entire Family coming out from the kitchen to chatter !
Again, I think the entire story was a Masterpiece !

Phil... you ought to write a book about your life in Thailand, including the wedding! Don't forget to include the dogs....
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your description of the Event of the Year.

The thing about haggling is
it must be taken seriously. Half-hearted haggling (mmm... like it!) is a complete waste of time and, frankly, rather insulting to the vendor. .
(P.S. Oh, and by the way - don't try it in Tesco, you'll just make a fool of yourself.)
Don't kid yourself. Supermarket staff often have authority to mark down prices especially when items are comIng towards the final display date. Each supermarket has an approximate time scale for price reductions - 25% at noon, 50% at 6pm, 75 % at 8pm (can't remember which one that is) and the time table is published on the internet.
However, smile very nicely and you can sometimes persuade the assistant that this item is coming "very close" to it's sell by date and perhaps the price should be (name something not too stupid!) I once somehow got into an "auction" type situation with one such assistant there I was asking for a higher price and he was pushing the price down ....
I have even got nice discounts at Comet; you lose nothing by trying (and I can be very trying

)

Well I thought that our dear Philip had been living in sin there for a while but I take your point Neill and should probably leave our illustrious friend to better things than us nosing around in his wedding day!!
Nah come on Philip! have a rest and drop it all down

I seem to remember that within hours of his wedding Philip was posting stuff about haggling in the local market - seemed at the time a strange way to be starting his honeymoon!

I hope that he is OK, given recent news from Thailand.
Phil, are you and Mrs. Ajarn safe and well....?

I think the troubles are pretty well centralised in the city centre.
The army now seem to be back in control. (Rightfully or wrongly !)

Alive and kicking, as always. This sort of thing seems to be becoming a habit in Thailand, which is fine if they want to kill off the tourist trade altogether. It does seem to be a bit more serious and rather more widespread than before, but frankly, it could have been nipped in the bud ages ago if the powers that be really wanted it stopped. As our American friends would say, "Go figure." A lot of talk, and plenty of news coverage, but no real effect here in Hua Hin. But I do have to go to Bangkok for a couple of days in the next few weeks, so I'm hoping things will quieten down now.
Changing the subject, and on a more personal note, one of my fondest memories of my dear old Mum is her going through a list of all the family Christian names before finally hitting on the one she was after. And that was before she got old... We have a dog called Cobweb and a puppy called Pat Thai - I've recently heard myself yelling "Cowpat" up the street...
Another glimpse of my family life (enjoy it while it lasts!) - showering regularly is a pleasurable necessity here, but Mrs Ajarn occasionally takes issue if she thinks I'm not soaping myself thoroughly at least 3 times a day. She starts calling me "Khun Sa-at" (Mr Clean) in that unmistakable tone of voice that is the same in all languages. She does have her own little ways of encouraging me to shower more frequently, but I couldn't possibly mention them on a family forum.
