well we havent had one person knock on our door canvassing, and im in most of the day at the mo!!! Lots of leaflets but not people-very different to the local council elections last year. I should imagine some of my local mp's are too scared to show their facesNEILL THE NOTORIOUS wrote:I speak as an Electoral Canvasser of many years standing ------ !![]()
As far a Local Elections go --- there is NO substitute for "Knocking on doors"
If the Candidate can't be bothered to show their face, and take the flak -- if any -- then he or she, doesn't deserve to be elected.

In reply to Englishangel -- Part 1
I have tried to keep my Posts" A-political " --- but the interview, which you mentioned, just ASKS to get Flak ! !
(Wouldn't have happened with me ! ----- OOPs !
)
To the Part 2 ----
A Councillor friend of mine is heavily disabled (Politically Incorrect -- but that's what she calls it !)
When she sees a car in a "Disabled" spot, she puts a sticker under the Wiper ---- You have my parking spot --- would you like my Disability ! !
I mentione this to the people in TESCO --- and they said they wished they had some !!

Getting back to revolting pedants, one of my pet hates is the incredibly frequent confusion over the use of the apostrophe. It ain't rocket science!blondie95 wrote: I should imagine some of my local mp's are too scared to show their faces

I have recently been noticing particularly the number of people whose business is based on words but who cannot distinguish between who's and whose!!

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
Coming back to a posting by Neill.... I would say that I am becoming increasingly angered by the people who abuse disabled parking spaces. I am registered disabled (and just at the moment, things are pretty tough). Six or so weeks ago I came out of Sainsburys to find a rusted large white van parked across two disabled spaces. As I hobbled to my car, looking with interest at the Royal Crest on the two doors of this van, the driver came running out the store, saw me looking at his van, and gave me verbal abuse (multiple use of the 'f' word) indicating that he thought I was mistakenly believing that he had no disabled badge, as assumed that neither did I. I saw the van there again shortly afterwards, and a couple of weeks later saw it again. This time he jumped out of the driver's cab and ran into the store. I stayed in my car and observed a very small blond child (?2 years old) and a very large dog, in the driver's cabin. Whilst I was hurriedly sending myself text messages about this, the driver emerged - about 10 minutes later - shouting 'What the **** do you think you are doing?', jumped into the van and drove away. I reported him to the company registered to the Royal Crest - only to find that they had sold the van in January 2006 and were now concerned about someone driving around in one of their vans, inappropriately! They suggested that I reported him to the Police - but I don't think he is breaking any law. He is just selfishly taking away entitlement to disabled spaces from those more deserving than he is.

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
This is not just an english problem... yesterday at the supermarket I gave my best glare at a group of "youths" (now I know I'm getting old) who pulled into a family parking space with obviously no children of any description in the car! There was an empty space opposite - not wide enough to unload a newborn in a car seat but wide enough for 5 ignorant so-and-sos (why can't I use an apostrophe there? - it looks odd!
) to get out. Had my finnish been better I would have rolled down the window and said something!

Kerrensimmons ---
YES you should report this sort of thing, even if there is no "Crime" involved.
The Police have "Ways and Means" of making life extremely difficult for the types you encountered.
An elderly Lady, near me, was "Conned" by a couple of people who, saying her hedge was "Dangerous" offered to cut it -------
Yes you guessed it ! -- they did half the job -- took her to the Bank and departed !
Fortunately, a neighbour had taken the number of the van, and told me .
This was not a "Crime" -- but was a Civil matter, of unfulfilled Contract.
HOWEVER -- Neill rings up Trading Standards and the Police, who, subsequently took the "Company " apart viz :
Records of Employment, National Insurance, VAT, Income Tax, Vehicle Registration, MOT ------They can always find SOMETHING !
It might not work for all of us -- But Elderly Ladies, The Disabled, and the Swindled , have more "Pull" than they think !
Conttrary to popular belief -- Policemen are Human !

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
Our youngest daughter is a 'blue-badge' holder. (Yes - Hard to believe, I know). Parts of her spine are comprised of titanium.
Jan and I recently accompanied her to Crawley Hospital for a routine appointment. There are a very limited amount of disabled parking bays near to the entrance. On arrival, all were occupied. Daughter stops, get out of car and checks all the cars. One has NO BLUE badge displayed, yet has the 'driver. sitting in the drivers seat, obviously waiting for someone.
Daughter immediately parks our car tightly alongside the offending vehicle blocking it in, places her blue badge on the windscreen and we start to make our way into the hospital.
Irate driver winds her window down and asks 'what the hell we think we are doing'.
Daughter goes straight into J.R. mode and informs her that she is about to find hospital security and have her car clamped.
Rapidly exiting offending driver gives us our rightful place.
MORAL:- DON'T PUT UP WITH IT, EVEN IF IT DOES MEAN BEING RUTHLESS !!

I'm rather fond of a sign in nearby Tiverton which reads
PARKING FOR THE DISBALED

Maria - I am intrigued! If you were in a car (and I know that you don't drive) could you not have persuaded your husband to give them a piece of his mind? I know that he can swear in Finnish - not that I would recognise it if he did!

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
also as bad are the people who park in parent and child spaces, when clearly they do not have children with the, ,yes there is a car seat but no child or their children are 10+ and could clearly walk across the supermarket supervised and get in the car without needing to fly door open!

Forgive me laughing but you HAVE met my husband!! Like most Finns he doesn't kick up a fuss about anything, especially in public! He was probably trying to crawl under the seat and hide just from embarrassment at my "glare"! Instead we drove round the car park 3 times until another space became available.... rather than wait for the car that was obviously about to leave... presumably in case we offended them but waiting!?!
