Alan - with your extensive knowledge of music-hall, have you ever come across a male impersonator by the name of Edie Haley? I have one picture postcard of her, and other than that all I know is that she performed among other places at the Glasgow Empire. She was my father's aunt and he remembers her well. She was still around in the early 1940s.

More recently, there was the American comedian who used to appear on chat-shows on TV, pretending to be blind drunk. I can't remember his name, but he also, was a tee-totaler.

Thank you for the links, Alan. I am intrigued by the fact that Edie is described as a Glasgow mill girl! she was actually born in Manchester, one of about ten children. I was particularly interested in the article about Joe Peterson, because I have heard my father mention the name, but was never sure what the connection was - nor was he - or who was what gender! Dad remembers visiting Edie in Glasgow when he was on leave from the Navy towards the end of WW2. My father and his brother once met Renee Houston in a Workingmen's Club and she remembered working with Edie. I have never heard of her making any recordings, sadly.

A story which is unfortunately not in the on-line version of today's Daily Mail.
Apparently scientists have discovered that there are two types of vole - one is faithful to her partner and one is far from faithful. One has an excellent sense of her geographical position and the other has not. Scientists have found the gene which differentiates the two types of gene; when they put it into the "faithful" vole she became sex-crazed but also got a good sense of direction so that she could find her way around other vole's tunnels.
The moral seems to be: Don't expect a female who has good map-reading skills to be faithful.
