Alan - with your extensive knowledge of music-hall, have you ever come across a male impersonator by the name of Edie Haley? I have one picture postcard of her, and other than that all I know is that she performed among other places at the Glasgow Empire. She was my father's aunt and he remembers her well. She was still around in the early 1940s.

More recently, there was the American comedian who used to appear on chat-shows on TV, pretending to be blind drunk. I can't remember his name, but he also, was a tee-totaler.

FOSTER BROOKS !
Found him.

Here's quite a long clip of him with the late great Dean Martin. ENJOY....

Remember, Foster Brooks doesn't/didn't drink alcohol. What an observer of behaviour.

Thank you for the links, Alan. I am intrigued by the fact that Edie is described as a Glasgow mill girl! she was actually born in Manchester, one of about ten children. I was particularly interested in the article about Joe Peterson, because I have heard my father mention the name, but was never sure what the connection was - nor was he - or who was what gender! Dad remembers visiting Edie in Glasgow when he was on leave from the Navy towards the end of WW2. My father and his brother once met Renee Houston in a Workingmen's Club and she remembered working with Edie. I have never heard of her making any recordings, sadly.

Subject: Good advertising

HEMA is a Dutch department store. The first store opened on November 4, 1926, in Amsterdam .. Now there are 150 stores all over the Netherlands
.

Take a look at HEMA's product page. You can't order anything and it's in Dutch - but just wait a couple of seconds and watch what happens.

Don't click on any of the items in the picture, just wait and see what happens.

This company has a sense of humour and a great computer programmer, who has too much time on his hands.

Click link below and enjoy - you need sound to enjoy it best!!

Perhaps it's the one that terrorised a postman in Devon last year.

Really, Maggie? I've fled from a vicious black swan in Kent (horrid bird!) but haven't encountered an evil pheasant in Devon!

Perhaps Social Services moved it to a secret location in Yorkshire with a new name!

I found this this morning. I'm still a bit delirious with laughing. Too bad, mein Fuhrer!

You can see where the late, and very great Les Dawson got his inspiration from, here with the wonderful Roy Barraclough.

........ and don't forget Mr Dawson's expertise on the keyboard. (Yes - He was an accomplished piano player).

To my eternal joy, I actually shared a lunch-time drink with him in 'The Castle' pub, opposite the BBC rehearsal studios in N.W.10 a few years before his untimely death.

I believe Leslie Henson is of the era of my childhood ---- (1930s)

He had a wonderful, imaginary family, which included "Horace" who was entirely unintelligble !
after a long gabble --- "what did Horace say ?" and the reply would be "Yes" !
Aeroplanes, in his "Family" were --"Dickie Puff-Puffs" which, when you think of it, was quite clever, in the days of steam railways !

Leona [Lewis] had this message:
"In case u didn't no, Foie-gras is duck that is forced fed in a sickening cruel process and is banned in the uk"
So much for British state educashun - and they could be geese and not ducks.

...................................................................................................
A story which is unfortunately not in the on-line version of today's Daily Mail.
Apparently scientists have discovered that there are two types of vole - one is faithful to her partner and one is far from faithful. One has an excellent sense of her geographical position and the other has not. Scientists have found the gene which differentiates the two types of gene; when they put it into the "faithful" vole she became sex-crazed but also got a good sense of direction so that she could find her way around other vole's tunnels.
The moral seems to be: Don't expect a female who has good map-reading skills to be faithful.
