I certainly remember school white Y-fronts - I think they let us have our boxers after a year or so, can't remember if that was choice or that they phased-out the school stuff.

I notice that the sock design has now changed, and that some of the breeches are of a different material, an almost grey colour?
Looked very weird when I was last down there...

this will sound really weird, but underwear was a main complaint at Hertford, I think we got to wear our own before the boys did though. (see Hertford threads).

Joke.

Girls have knickers which say Sunday, Monday, Tuesday...etc on them.

What do boys have on their underpants?

January, February, March.......

Are you having a laugh? :) :?: I'm only 4 years younger than you and there was none of this in my day...

Can't believe it could change so quickly.

Definitely right - a lot changed in my time there.
First few years we weren't allowed duvets - had to have sheets and blankets, made every morning.

All changed pretty quick....

I do just remember that. There was one house left, Ma B I think, where the squits had to have sheets and blankets. Think from the 3rd form they could have duvets.

BTW No I wasn't, at any time, in Ma B dorm. So there's no reason for a stupid joke...

Thinking about the uniform, it was a great leveller and there were a number of people whose parents could not afford all the clothes that the kids wear now...

I would restrict own clothes to the seniors when they go into town and all on Sundays apart from chapel.

And Julian, I believe the breeches have been redesigned so they are no longer as 'itchy'...

There probably still are. Much better now Primark is trendy tho'.

I went to uni. with two pairs of jeans, two skirts, one 'best' dress, two pairs of 'trainers', one pair of dress shoes, some tops, an anorak and a cape (coat) which had been my needlework project in Upper Sixth at CH.

By the end of my first year my wardrobe had trebled. Students got a good grant in those days. I feel really sorry for them nowadays.

Too true, Mary. My father could not believe how much less Hertfordshire asked him to contribute than CH had. One year it was £6.00, he solemnly insisted on giving me the £2.00 at the start of each term!

We managed trips to certain shops in Horsham, in uniform, to buy alcohol. And succeeded more often than not. We were called penguins, true, but we were penguins with vodka. Ha.

no sober penguins with bottles of vodka down the front of our britches. Only to be drunk at school, otherwise it wasn't so fun...

Alex and Andy wore the britches. Nicola and I did the buying.

Oops, sorry guys. Cat out of bag...

Actually, we did the persuading a "little old lady" that it was one of our dads' birthdays and he really wanted a bottle of vodka but we were too young to but it. Worked every time, apart from once when someone's matron spotted the distinctive uniform...
