We were cursed with moistened episodes where we lived previously and not just contained within the house. Apart from the flood the month before we married, the day before we exchanged contracts and completed on the sale of the cottage last year, we found a drip coming throught the light fitting in the dining room. The previous owners had placed a board on top of an old cot side over the water tank. The cot bars had rotted away and fallen in causing the level to rise and it was coming through the airing cupboard and down into the dining room. The house was completely cleared and cleaned up ready for the new owners, and it was chance that someone had gone in to get something during the morning and heard the dripping. The other occasion was the week before Christmas (some years ago) when we'd been out carol singing. It had been raining very heavily and there were 'puddles' everywhere on the roads. We had towed a friend home and begun our journey back about 1am. The rain had stopped, but the water had continued to pour off the fields. We went into a 'puddle' and, much like Doctor Foster, it went up to our middle, with us in the car floating down the road, water coming in under the doors. Quite scary. We tried to steer it to the side of the road to be out of the way come morning, but the road dipped and the car began to sink. We got out into thigh-high, freezing, dirty water and as we did, Carols for Choirs I and II went bobbing out the back door. They are still a bit crinkly. There were no phone signals in that area so we walked for a couple of miles, until we managed to get my parents who came out to save us. Ironically, the car started fine the next day when the garage had a look at it and suggested it only needed drying out, but that following night there was a huge freeze and the whole thing was iced up. Bye bye, car. Consequently I will never, ever live in a house near a river, lake, sea, stream, trickle or pond. Turning the tap on freaks me out.
