I see that the OED describes the Settle (Noun) as a "High backed seat, or bench, often with arms, and frequently with a box underneath " It comes from the Old English " setl " A seat ----- what else ?
How far back do settles go ? ?
At the danger of introducing another Topic --- Naughty ! were they not used, with leather trousers, for testing the strength of Beer ? Not the Housey ones !

The ones illustrated are actually the same as we had. I don't mean they look the same, they are the identical objects. Like the beds. It would be interesting to know just how old they were.

I have tried to put one up on the Barnes photo site but it only gives the link.

I think that I may have found the earliest reference to the settle, which appears in The Canterbury Tales:

"For I wol telle a legende in fine fettle
Of Chriſt’s Hoſpital and the boys’ ſettle
Wherein their garments were ſtor’d,
Blue coatſ, breecheſ and hoſe in yellow,
And by their slepping place ykept,
So guarded it was as they Å¿lept."

I'm confused.
I thought the Canterbury Tales were by Chaucer in the 14th Century, a bit early for CH and the pupils, unless you have found another version, or are taking the Michael.

Just seen that it is from an 18th century modernisation by Samuel Cobb (1675 - 1713) who was at CH, so presumably the settles were there when he was.

I like the way that some of the beds had been extended in length, I would guess as the average age in the school increased.

There were two lengths of bed when I was there. On the longer ones I could stretch out at my present height, so they must have been 6 ft 6. But they were narrow. If it weren't for that, I'd have one tomorrow if any were going, and put a futon on the boards.

I did Canterbury Tales, -- the Prologue for School Cert (Anybody remember that ? ? ) I dom't seem to remember any "Naughty Bits " then , but in those days I thought GIRLS were funny creatures that didn't play Rugby.
Of course now they do ------ Further confusion !
