It seems to have been the same at Hertford until 1985 which is REALLY unbelievable.

I vaguely remember there being a small tuck shop at Hertford. I only ever remember going there once! It was behind the back door to the left as you came out the science block.

At the moment, I'm having a particular craving for KitKat Chunkies, which have saved my life on a couple of occasions where I've been too lazy to breakfast properly...

To echo the above, too much is better than too little, because if it's not eaten, it will just carry over into the next 3-week stint. I try to avoid the tuck shop where I can as it's a tad expensive, but then I do have the Gr.W tuck shop in house, which is cost-price

Oh, that said, Tuck shop does sell the jelly snakes, which are AMAZING.

I used to have an almost religious diet coke and twix from tuck shop a couple of times a week whilst watching dodgy afternoon films back in house with my friend!

Is my DS allowed to bring a laptop with him? If so, do many students have them? Do they have a lot of space for clothes? What other things should he bring that might be useful? What is he not allowed to bring? Also it will be his birthday during the first few weeks, when there is no contact allowed.Will they do anything special for him on his birthday?? Will I be allowed to send presents? Thanks in advance.

I've pm'd you Jade, but basically the answers are:

Yes - he can have a laptop
No - not many have them at that age, more common as they get older
Yes - plenty of room for 3 weeks' worth of clothes
Yes - they'll do something for his birthday, it varies from house to house but will probably involve cake
Yes - you can send presents, cards etc.

Can't think of anything he's not allowed to take with him.

Ok JR, there are lots of things he's NOT allowed to take with him, but I was thinking of everyday items that he might use at home (that Jade would approve of, also)

I think you need to check with the Housemaster on New Entrants' Day regarding a 2nd former bringing a laptop, as I don't think they have them in the House I work in unless necessary for school work (have dyslexia, for example). Mobile phones are not allowed for the first three weeks.

Best not to bring anything that has great sentimental value or any expensive /delicate clothing as problems occur if these things get damaged or lost. Make sure everything he does bring is clearly labelled with name and House name and number (you will be given this when you come in May). So many unnamed items end up in Lost Property each term and many are never claimed.

My son is in 2nd form and we were told that he couldn't bring a laptop. To be honest I don't think he would have found any use for it. What I would advice is a key padlock not a combination one for his tuck locker. The older boys see it as good sport to try and work out the combinations and open the tuck lockers! Also anything that needs storing in fridge usually gets eaten / drunk by the rest of them so buy stuff that can be stored in a small cupboard (tuck locker).
For boys I would recommend a few more football shorts. I had to buy more after he started and get them to him. He was going through them at a great rate. Also more track suit bottoms. They don't have to be school ones. He uses his old school ones which have the old school logo on.
