Mate of ours is what is commonly termed, a 'Screw' on the Lifers wing at a well know London Hostelry run by 'Her Madge'.
He reckons his customers live better than most average working class people. So much for crime and PUNISHMENT.

Did you know that 'Lifers' get almost twice as much money allowed for each meal allowed by H.M. than School Kids ?

From my very limited knowledge of CH I am surprised to read the reaction to the MasterPlan. As an outsider, the impression I got of CH was that it had plenty of money and that money was well spent. I only see the wonderful buildings, the chapel, the grounds, etc and it look fantastic.
But the reality would appear to be different. I read that money may be being wasted on refurbishing accommodation to perhaps a standard that isn't really necessary; that some boarders will benefit from these improvement while others have to wait, causing understandable resentment.
But perhaps CH is being slightly over generous with their subsidies also. Many parents contribute only £250 per year and some pay nothing at all. Even state schools aren't that cheap. I may have completely got hold of the wrong end of the stick, hopefully someone will put me right.
But I imagined everything to be perfect, when obviously, it isnt.

I think you'll find that C.H.'s 'money' has always been tied up in property, which appears to have been sold off at a rapid pace.
It has been said on another web-site that a certain property development company in London, (ALLEGEDLY), made a fortune and then 'dissolved' themselves after the sale of some of the London C.H. property.
(Please note, the word ALLEGEDLY ! It's noted! Mod)

Some of the children are very bright and come from very impoverished backgrounds.
When I went I had gained full marks in the 11 plus, had three younger brothers and sisters and my parents earned so little they didn't pay any tax. I had two parents working too. There are kids out there who only have one parent (or none) and this is their best chance for a good education since grammar schools disappeared (in most of the couintry).
Not a reactionary and have never voted Conservative in my life, just feel that a good education is the way out of poverty. It worked for me and my husband. (Son of a miner from a Yorkshire pit village and went to grammar school)

A couple of recent points made here deserve a decent reply, so I will start up a new thread, 'Masterplan - from bad to much much worse II'
