Police rugby was an eye opener, everyone wanted to have a dig at you (I wonder why).
Having played rugby against a lot of police sides as a student I can confirm that police sides dished it out too.

I do remember Chemi T (Mary Thompson) turning out for the staff versus school hockey match wearing brogues, a tweed skirt and brandishing a hurley (hurling?) stick well above shoulder height. Now SHE would have put the fear of God into Haileybury boys.

Would have made a good fast bowler too if her speed and aim with the board rubber was anything to go by.
When I played rugby we had the Kent County prop in our team. We played an annual "friendly" hockey match against the ladies hockey club.

My mate John, the prop, bore down on this tall willowy centre half and I closed my eyes wondering what would happen to her. When I opened them John was poleaxed on the ground surrounded by concerned players from both teams!

This was a guy that could carry almost a whole rugby pack over the try line on the charge from short range.

Mixed hockey is very dangerous!

I did play with a second row forward who always seemed to be in a fight.
He was a mounted policeman and I met him at a football match. His horse broke wind whilst I was talking to him and started to head-butt passing football fans.
What do they say about dogs and their masters.

Sorry, Euterpe13, we'll let you have your bit of the forum back soon.

I well remember Jo. She was pretty good at all sports - but I don't think she swam. Our champion swimmer was called Delphine - some form of prescience by her parents if it really does mean Dolphin.

Incidentally I don't remember 6s saying Aunty Dot, it was always just DR. The only part of her confirmation classes I remember is her saying that she washed out her kit on Sundays after International matches. It obviously didn't count as work if it had been an international!!!

When did the name Aunty Dot start?
DR played a pretty fierce game of hockey in my time-I was glad I wasa no good at games when I saw her with a hockey stick in her hands.
I did however have the misfortune to umpire (twice) for Miss Blench in the staff v school tennis match. I can't remember who had the bad luck to partner her, or how the opposing school pair kept from laughing, but har swooping underarm serve was like something from ancient history book.

I can't remember which house you said you were in midget, was it 3's? I just wonder if Aunty Dot was a 2's thing. DR was more common.

She didn't play any sports when I was there, ahe was 53 when I started. She did coach cricket though.

OMG, I have just realised that I am nearly as old as she was when I started. Scaryyyyyyyyyyyy.

Anyone who knew me up to 15 years old might think that, but once in GE and above I changed.

Barbara just knew me then.
