JR, Do you think these Surrey spiders know where the border comes between Greater London and Surrey? After all, nobody else seems too sure!

For the benefit of those frightened by spiders there was an article on Sky News this morning saying that spiders hate and avoid conkers. My son has done a Google search and has found umpteen references; may I suggest that you also do a search?

Pissed? definitely - I have just got back from a Vendage ceremony at one of our local vineyards - cut some grapes, taste all the wine and then a feast in the garden of the local chateau. W-o w!

I must admit that this turn in the weather has driven quite a few of the large hairy garden spiders indoors for some warmth !

I'm having to sleep in the spare room for a while and the night before last there was an ENORMOUS black job sitting on the wall above the bed. I caught it in a glass and flushed it down the loo.....how cruel.

I wish the little horrors would stop making webs across the garden path during the night, to catch the unwary in the morning. I must admit to getting some pleasure fromgently pinging the edge of a web and watching an enraged spider rushing about like a thing demented.

I'm forever getting wispy bits of web in my eyes and hair, either from the bush by my front door or the arch by my back door! And Sylvia (Neill said it couldn't be Sidney), the black and yellow job who has a web right across my front window, is still very active and obvious.

I'm SO glad that they seem to be alive and thriving --- to eat the little nasties that I hate !!!

OK so I am an Insect Lover !!!

Perhaps Lonelymom could form an affection for the Birds, which eat Spiders --- but I'm not sure what they may be --- ?

Miss Pye-Smith (biology) was terrified of birds and fell into near hysteria if anyone took an injured bird to her. You would think the bio teacher was the obvious person to approach.
