but what's 'Housey'?
Isn't Housey what the girls used to refer to Horsham and, as I was given to understand by a visiting Horsham Latin Club, vice versa? :?:

I think you'll find it's a 'wallet of governors', but on special occasions (Royal visits and the like) I've heard it called a 'bank'...

(and to any gov'nors who may read this, I promise I'm only kidding!)

'bank', 'wallet', I like, but both are definitely singular, hence 'was' not 'were'.

'Housey' was also the school itself when I was there.

I may be hoist by my own pedant here (O' Level English Grade C in 1970) but surely 'there WAS a bunch of governors'.
I agree with you englishangel. It has to be 'was' because 'a bunch' is singular, 'bunches' is the plural. You wouldn't say 'there WERE a bunch of grapes over there', you'd say 'there WAS a bunch'. Am I right or am I more confused than I thought I was? :?

Well... you're right of course, lonelymom, but you would get away with saying

"Eee, it were bunch of grapes ovver theer, luv."

If you were from the North. Just a thought.

That's a very interesting post, Alan - would you like to know the origin of the expression 'beyond the pale'? Well, it...

More relevantly (at the moment, though someone will undoubtedly complain that we're off topic without explaining what the topic is), can you say that the Spanish football team 'are' celebrating 'their' European Cup win?

hello everyone!
well i'm home now!
sorry i didn't post while i was there, but neither john or hannah did either so whatever!
anyway
I LOVE IT!!
i got totally homesick on sunday, but i made some good friends that made it a whole lot easier!
and the best thing of all: NOBODY MENTIONED MY HAIR!
well obviously they did, but not in a sort of, "change it NOW" way, a more sort of, "oh it's useful to see where you are in the lunch hall and junk"
but anyway
it's amazing!
i even got used to the uniform :P
it's great though, john and hannah are really lovely, and johns house is next door to me, so we went to lessons together and stuff and kept one another company!
:D

it's actually more weird being at home... my room looks so much more colourful now i'm back in it :P

anyway, must go, mum wants me to tell her all about it!!!
xxx idgie xxx
