I was reading the other day (cannot for the life of me remember where) that government workers have been told not to use Latin in letters etc. oops there I go again.
The ones I remember that were not to be used were i.e., e.g., and via but I am sure there were more. I just wish SKY sports would not use "V". when they mean "versus", what is wrong with "against"?

It was a joke among some of us in the 60s to comment on something that would now I suppose be called "cool" to say: "That's exit, man." (Geddit?)

I am almost sure that this is true. There was an advertisement on television for a compilation CD by one of these crossover sopranos - Lesley Garrett, I think. Amongst the items she was singing, there was featured
Angus Dei
Somebody tell me I was imagining it! I laughed so much, I woke up the cat.

Sorry Angela, you weren't. Somewhat off topic I know but reminds me of several years ago when I was laid up in bed with a wrecked knee and watching day time tv (in the days before SkyMultiroom you young 'uns). Richard & Judy I believe who had Tony Blair on as a guest. They asked viewers to phone up with questions and by then I was not only immobile but also spitting teeth as I'd knocked the remote control off the bed and couldn't move enough to reach it and turn the prog off. So I phoned in instead, (as you do); the call centre person asked me what I wanted to know and I asked if they would politely enquire if his favourite book might be Animal Farm. After a long pause the girl at the other end said to me: (Cross my heart and hope to die) "Is that a cookery book?"

As an off-topic follow-up to the off-topic topic, I saw an American economist (sic) being interviewed on TV the other evening on the subject of the current financial debacle.
"The problem is," he informed his rapt audience, "that virtually all our imports come from abroad..."

Wasn't that something George Bush was supposed to have said? I don't think he actually did but he sounds as though he might have.

Wasn't it George Cheney who, visiting Latin America, regretted the fact that he didn't speak Latin !

My favourite Bushism -
"The trouble with the French is that they have no word for "entrepreneur".

That was probably why he was in Rome at the beginning of September, messing up my trip.
Sunday we went to the Coliseum, and just as we were about to leave, found that we were not allowed out. Not merely us, but all visitors with the exception of one D Cheney, who had just arrived on a visit. We were stuck inside for almost half an hour, after which he had the gall to wave at us as he left.
Next day, trip to Assisi and Orveta to see the cathedral and who should be there but Cheney, wearing the same blue shirt.
We had only gone for 4 days and Cheney managed to mess up 2 of them.
I hope he is restricted to visiting his oil wells in the future.

Way OT but linked top previous post.....
Went to Tower Bridge in the summer with the children and we were talking with one of the guides about how, once the siren's have gone and the barriers are down, the river has right of way over the road. Once Bill Clinton, recently retired from the Whitehouse, was in London and his motorcade had become split by a few cars on the approach to Tower Bridge, and the sirens went after BC had crossed but before the G-Men had caught up. Apparently the CIA guy stormed into the control room and ordered the bridge to be closed, even threatening to pull his gun, but the supervisor said he had no authority in this country, and that the only one who could close the bridge was something like the head of the Port of London Authority!
Apparently Bill couldn't have cared less........

US Security is like that.
When I was in Guatemala in the early 90´s, and guerillas were still active, the US ambassador went awol from the embassy. It was lunch time and suddenly, the US embassy had no idea of the whereabouts of their Ambassador. There was nothing on his agenda and he was not to be found anywhere. He may well have had a mobile phone, but if it was anything like mine, it was a large chunky thing for leaving in the car.
Anyway, about 40 minutes after the panic had started, he came wandering through the embassy front doors. He had gone for lunch on his own to a small open air taco stall on the other side of the road, (actually, it is a dual carriageway with a park like expanse in the middle).
This was a time when US citizens were limited to driving in daylight hours and only on certain roads.
The ambassador was totally unphased by the whole thing and the US marine guard on the door got it in the neck for not have seen the ambassador when he left.
IMHO, US security is based on lots of rules, machines etc, but no-one has the common sense as to how they should be implemented.
I met some people in Little Rock who were going to BC´s first inauguration, and they all referred to him as "Slick Willy".

US Security is like that.
Despite all their efforts they have lost quite a few, including JFK, Robert Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald (even when surrounded by police), Martin Luther King and Reagan (nearly).
John, Did you get my input for TOB?

There were also a couple of attacks on Gerald Ford but these did not get the same publicity as the others and most notably Reagan whose press secretary i think was left paralysed having taken one for his boss...

I know it is slightly sick, but on the subject of assasinations --- "But apart from that Mrs Lincoln ,-- how did you enjoy the Play ?"
