"Narrow Dog" should be required reading for anyone intent on canal cruising.

A narrow boat is a narrow boat. a canal boat doesn't exist!

Used to go on them quite a lot, helped bring one down from above Birmingham somewhere to Limehouse Basin marina in London once, as half of a crew of two. Great fun.

Well, I guess they might exist, in that any vessel that travels a canal could possibly be termed a canal boat.

I* knew I'd been dun. Went to Narnia (in New Zealand) three years ago and not a faun, centaur or stuff there. Even stayed the night and the only noise was SWMBO snoring!

Well I am back from the cruise - arrived back on Friday. We all enjoyed it and would definitely go again! The kids have already asked when are we going again I've put some pictures on Facebook if anyone fancies a look.

....and I am following them intently. The kids look as though they were having a whale of a time. You're doing some of the same ports of call as us so I'm particularly enjoying seeing them. Only another week to go.......

Excellent! I can't remember which ports you are doing now? Are you packed yet?

Starting from Palma, then Tunis, Rome, Genoa, St Raphael, Barcelona, Naples, Livorno, Villefranche (for Monte Carlo), Ajaccio. Not packed yet, but shopping frantically!

A word (Metaphorically) in your ear JO.
When you call at Civitiveccia for Rome, the coaches to take you there are expensive.
I don't know if you are "' 'cumbered " by Children, but if not, walk down the Quayside to the Railway Station and get a return ticket to the Centre of Rome --- thereafter by Metro.
As an example, last time we were there, a coach trip cost £20 per head --- the Train tickets for two (Return) were 9.50 Euros ! !
Of course if you are having a "Tour" ignore this arithmetic !

Thanks for the tip Neill, but I'm afraid we've wimped out and gone for one of the ship's official excursions. Mainly because, with the distance involved, we want to be absolutely sure of getting back to the ship on time - or at least if we don't, it's their fault and the ship has to wait for us!

We are trying to do our own thing a lot more this time though - the ship's excursions are convenient but it's often possible to DIY a lot cheaper, especially when the port/quayside is very close to town.

I love the idea of a cruise, and always picture myself on one similar to that in An Affair to Remember, with me as Deborah Kerr-beautiful evening gown after evening gown. When me and the h2b go on holiday we always make sure we get dressed up for our meal in the evening, so many dont just walk into dinner in the same stuff we saw them in breakfast in and its been 25 degrees or hotter all day and they have been out and about!

Anyway....yes I like the idea of a cruise, very romantic and glamorus (right up my street) and that you can see many places in a short time.......................however I have a dreadful fear of boats! Im a very strong and confident swimmer so its nothing to do with that but the concept of a boat out in the middle of the sea well and truly puts the frights on me! Although on our honeymoon in Barbados in November I will attempt a boat as one hotel offers a day out on a catamaran to snorkel and see turtles and as Im desperate to see them I think i shall have a go!

Cruising had a completely different meaning when I was in 'Plod' !
