Not a lot of confidence in 'em these days.

They all seem to be better pen-pushers/defenders of 'Elf & Safety and general factotum's than coppers !

Not at all, Neill.

It's all the political intervention.

Invention of the new 'card-board-coppers', (CSPO's), and the like.

Oh, we've got some of those community policemen/women round here. They are very friendly, love a chat etc, and I suppose their presence makes some people feel safer (although they only work office hours, which isn't really the time that people feel unsafe generally), and make other people behave themselves (the local teenage groups etc), but they just don't seem to have any real authority. Our current man (I say current because they seem to change frequently) is very young and on the short side (and has lovely blue eyes :) ), but doesn't really seem capable of dispersing a large group of yobs!

I think the problem is rooted in their "Power of Arrest" -- which is minimal, and barely exceeds the normal Citizen's Power of Arrest.

The Special Constable --- when on duty -- had the power of a Policeman ( I was one --- much to my Father's disgust --- I believe he was spinning in his Grave, when I was a Member of the Police Authority ! !)

Although the "Specials" were generally looked down on by the Professionals, they were very useful in Villages where the local Copper was a singleton ! --- Fetes, Guy Fawkes Night, VIP Visits etc. Traffic Control.

Perhaps JR we should revert to the N. Ireland "B Specials ? (Armed and Dangerous !)

Yes mine this end of Heath Road, is not very helpful, when the car got vandelised in Feb she just said its a shame and kept implying that I must have done something to get them to do it, leave something valuable!!!! I mean really Im not stupid! And that they know of people using catapults but they are toy until they find them in the act of using it as a weapon...so would they please like to sit outside my house at 1am just in case???
