Dear lonelymom,

The best way to overcome your fears is to face them head on. If you are afraid of frogs, the next time you see one, pick it up and kiss it - you never know what might happen. If you are afraid of drug addicts with knives mugging you in the street, the next time it happens, don't scream, hand over your bag and run, but talk to him calmly. Ask him why he's being so nasty. Then get your can of Mace and spray the so-and-so to boggery!



P.S. To any children reading, the above is an attempt at light-hearted humour and should on no account be tried at home. What you do on the street is entirely up to you, though. Aunty Phil is not a qualified therapist and any advice given should be taken only at the advisee's own risk.

Philip, you are so funny! Thanks for the advice, but since there is NO WAY I am touching a frog, let alone kiss it ( !) I would say your advice is rubbish and your days as Aunty Phil are numbered!

I have just managed to catch a very buzzy wasp in a glass with paper and let it go outside........with NOT ONE scream from me! I personally am VERY proud of myself

I have to agree...

I cannot stand wasps - they have no reason for being! I was very proud of myself last week... a wasp found its way into my hermetically sealed, triple glazed house and so I opened the door to encourage it out - another one flew straight in! Rather than panic in front of my impressionable 3 year old, I calmly talked myself (and her) through process of finding a large clean glass and a piece of cardboard to catch each one and then release it outside.... I think Hanna saved me from panicking!

Having just read through this thread, I was saying to myself "I can generally cope with spiders, creepy crawlies etc" but then noticed I've moved my feet up off the floor!

Of course, we don't get anything creepy crawly here in Finland - they'd all get killed off over the winter!Spiders are generally small or spindly and nothing as exotic as a scorpion ('cept me! )
