Oh God, Oxo cubes!

My mum encouraged me to drink that concoction when I was a kid.

Vile!

You can never finish discussing beer - it's just too interesting a topic. :D

I mostly like to drink good ale (which limits my choice of pubs quite a bit), but there is also a place for good lager, especially German, Czech, Japanese etc.

Unfortunately a lot of British pubs just serve mass-produced rubbish which has a nasty metallic taste and gives you a headache.

I'm sure that Satan is already involved in the brewing industry - that's why we see unspeakable (and undrinkable) garbage like Caffrey's (and any other 'smoothflow' beer) in our pubs. This stuff and American 'lite' beers are absolute proof of the involvement of the horned one. Beer for people who don't really like beer.

Younger drinkers can at least be grateful that they missed the '60s and '70s - the heyday of Watney's Red Barrel, Double Diamond, etc.

OK, rant over, but it won't take much to set me off again......a mention of 'a cup of Bovril' should do it. Anyone out there who actually likes drinking the stuff?

My husband does, and Oxo cubes made up, I think it is disgusting.

Also Horlicks (the old type) and broad beans are a big no-no, even the smell makes me heave. (puking smiley page won't load
Horlicks and broad beans sounds like an interesting combination...

Hot milk.... even the smell makes me feel sick ( chocolate or coffee added, and it's OK)

Marmite yes, not so much bovril.

This topic reminds me of a HMHB lyric:

Bin-men, thin men, lexicographers -
Squid yes, not so octopus.

Horlicks has to be the most vile substance on the planet. Competing with Marmite type bad.

Broad beans, yum!

Oxo cubes, hmm, when made into gravy and poured over roast beef, yes, I think that works. Why on earth would your mother make you drink it? My mother's odd, but not that odd!

All mothers were odd during the '60s.

Bovril, Cod liver oil, malt extract, yes, and Horlicks etc. - you wouldn't believe what we had to ingest.... :(

That's all grim. I've had to do spoonfuls of cod liver oil before. Can't remember why but they soon gave up trying when it reappeared.

I think this behaviour was some sort of hangover from the war.....

Well my mother was born after the war so there's no excuse in her case.

There's also no excuse for hot milk.

Strong cheese, well now there's something I could get used to...

if you are in Kenya or Tanzania then the only beer drinkble (apart from the South African Castle Lager) is Kilamanjaro...
Great Plum i'm afraid i'm going to have to disagree with you there, Tusker is great if you can get hold of it. I had it out in Kenya and fell in love with the stuff.

Real Ale all the way, bring on the summer, bring on the Beer festival

We had Scotts Emulsion for coughs. You would go and choke quietly in the loos rather than let a staff member hear you cough! And if you don't know Scotts, believe me you don't want to
