I was behind an Aussie Ford pickup the other day, an enormous thing.

I thought that the favourite car in Australia, as it was in Argentina, was the Ford Falcon, 1950's design, built like a tank and never known to come out second best in a crash

Well, things have progressed a bit, but there are definitely Ford Drivers and Holden Drivers, and unless you have a company vehicle, the gas guzzlers have become less popular in recent months, due to exorbitant petrol prices - Aus$ 1.40 per litre. OK, I know it's still cheap compared to UK, but this time last year it cost me about $35 to fill the Laser, now it's $50+.

Tank-like vehicles are less popular with some drivers than crumple cars, but having been rear-ended in my Commodore (Holden equivalent to the Falcon) by a crumple car, I prefer to be surrounded by some oomph. I drove away with narry a dent, but the front of the offending vehicle was all over the tarmac.

Before this topic is relegated too far away - my favourite car was my second one - a BRG Jaguar XJ6 3.4. I bought it from a bloke in Purley for 780 quid and kept it for a few years before it died.....
Sometimes I used to just go and sit in it - it had a particular smell.
More recently I liked my old MGBGT (BRG again) but the bills began to outweigh the pleasure of driving it.....although handbrake turns were exceptionally good in that one.....

I get told off when I try to do handbrake turns

Unless it is my youngest son in the car

We went out once in the snow and did some graceful sort of car-ice skating near beachy head...

Anyone that knows me well will be aware that I have several favourite cars. My number one favourite has to be the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing circa '54-'57. I have seen about three of them, a very rare car indeed.

After recently watching a car restoration TV program I have become quite interested in the Porsche 911 convertible Targa from approx 1970s. This would be in my top 10.

My first and current car is a white 1995 N Reg Rover 100 series Metro (later shape design) 1400cc in very good condition. (I might post a pic eventually if I can find it). Surprisingly nippy for a small car and can allegedly go off the clock (110mph+ - not sure of accuracy though - specifications state 103 tops).

If insurance was cheaper for young men my first car would have been a well tuned 1.3i BRG John Cooper Mini with stripes (a relative offered it to me, but it was far too expensive for me to insure it)!!

Seem to be lots of interesting cars mentioned, the three that caught my attention were: Renault 4 (used to be quite a few in Brighton), VDP Metro (apparently extremely rare - the veneer is a bit weird though) and the white Mk1 Golf Cabriolet (that vehicle caught my eye on the Bax night, immaculate is the word Mr Plum).
