My hubby used to live in a place like that and they used to wake up with frost on the top of the bed and the water in the loo frozen.

I look forward to her complaints!! I have given her enough advice which has chosen to dis-regard - so she's on her own now - with 4 other girls and they are going to have to make some major changes to their lifestyles if they want to be warm this winter - which according to the weathermen ( This was going to be the hottest summer on record right?) that we are in for a long COLD winter! And Leeds is UP North on the Eastern side of the Pennines - ha ha ha ha.

house sounds exactly like mine was, we had stone hall way and kitchen(just to add to the coolness!) It was anightmare to heat up, what was worse there was no thermostat or thing on the boiler to set when you wanted it on, literally had to do it when want it.

Did you go to Leeds Amy? If so you MUST know where she is living!! And her landlord Mr Bobatt! He's appalling - the house is a fire trap - as he has covered up the ceilings initially with painted polystyrene tiles ( some are evident in the hallways as well!!) with tongue and groove pine which has been varnished! The gas boiler in the kitchen was leaking gas & he wouldn't believe them, then there is the downstairs loo - which the builders say is full of methane! I certainly wouldn't want to take a naked light to it!

But we as parents are so much more aware of the risks etc whereas students just want a "home" and they don't seem to care too much as long as it's cheap and cheerful!

Heating is on here - bah humbug!

my heating is most certainly on (to dispear of bf)!

I was in Leicester, although most student accomodation in cities is these 3 storey victorian terraces. Ours had a fire excape from attic rooms that was minus steps at points-was ok when you had learnt which no and remembered to count.
We had nightmare in last year when water from bad plumbing in the bathroom began to gather in kitchen ceiling and caused the light to blow on a regular basis-according to landlord it was our fault and cost him Â£5,000! lets just say we never saw our Â£250 deposits

Must put in a word here, too late for Amy, but anyone else who is renting, make sure there is a Landlord's Gas Safety Certificate and an independent inventory, get your own if there isn't one.

But every student must know you never pay your final months rent as you will not get your deposit back (unless you are keeping the house on for a second year). The landlord can never get you evicted in less than 12 weeks so as long as you are getting out in less than 4 then you are OK.

Sorry if there are any HMO landlords on the forum, and of source I do not condone illegal behaviour - it is just quid pro quo for all the corner cutting they tend todo putting students at risk

I agree - even when I was renting privately before buying ( only for 10 years!) I often had to get the letting agents to come and resolve things I knew were illegal - and then having been H&S trained my eye for the illegal is much sharper!

I have gone through all the contract and made a list of questions etc that was only 3 pages in word! The landlord wants to get into the Leeds Uni Group of Unipol - where there are standards which have to be met and then you get given reliability for students - however, he's not goin to make it this year!!

The girls are protected thankfully bu Unipol at Leeds Uni - so any health hazards they can go to them.

Back to topic -

this changeable weather means what we wear in bed is getting a little confusing! it is still cool enough to recommend Pj's but not cold enough yet for the thermals - hope that gets through to you all!

that was only my uni house. Flat i rented up till April was luxury. Now i own my own house and therefore i have checked everything is a o.k

Hey Jude

During my time at Leeds I lived for two years in a three story back-to-back terraced house in Headlingly: two front doors, one on Grimthorpe Terrace and the other on Grimthorpe, er, can't remember.

Double glazing? Heating? Great cellar - many happy parties down there, until it filled with sewage.

Nothing. All year round. The naughty naked nude is the only way to be.

Wore CH style jimjams for a few (flat/bedroom sharing) years after leaving school, but have NEVER since been so cold as in CH dorms or my relatives' place in Kent.

In bed at CH, remember on more than one occasion wearing all at once:
pyjamas
2 pairs socks
jumper
balaclava
gloves

I don't remember the CH dorm as being particularly cold, strangely enough! I love your list of nightwear, Crippen! You must have looked very splendid, insulated, and well protected against Horsham dorm atrocities!

But I don't really like a very warm bedroom. My mother had this thing that for Health Reasons, the window must be always open 3" at the top...

Although I do love glamorous nightwear, it's nice to have a really warm cuddly duvet, and having suffered a bit in my youth - the girls will know what I mean - a hot water bottle is just wonderful.

The hot-water-bottle will probably soon be banned on account of burning or drowning health and safety regulations!

I only had to wear that get-up a few times, but socks and a jumper were not uncommon in bed.
I do actually have evening "lounging" wear now (some freebie Calvin Klein pyjama trousers and a t shirt usually, but no proper 'jamas or dressing gown) but it all comes off at bedtime.
I believe that a window should be at least an inch open all year round too, and a good face full of cold water first thing in the mornings usually wakes me up. Had terrible trouble getting up at 7.20 at CH. It was often dark. Still am alate night, late up type. It's me circadian rhythms innit!

I think Horsham was colder than Hertford. I went out with a Hertford girl for a short while and she also said it wasn't that cold in the dorms there.

Getting up at 7.20 at CH? I hadn't realised that Horsham was such a do-as -you-like holiday camp!
