Re: Davey Jones - his inspiration!
AIUI it was a man who invented it. 3M allow their staff so many hours a week to follow their own ideas - the man came up with these glue globules but couldn't think of a use. Discussing it with others over lunch somebody came up with the Post-it note use.cj wrote:And apparently David Baddiel's mother invented the Post-it note (or to be correct, the glue that doesn't stick properly!).icomefromalanddownunder wrote:Hands up who knew that Mike Naismith's mum invented Tippex, or Whiteout, or Correction Fluid or whatever it's called in your part of the World.
FWIW 3M policy is that any invention is replaced annually to avoid the problem of patents running out; they always have a new product to keep thye revenue stream going. AIUI at least until recently they never paid a dividend to shareholders (which is why SWMBO won't buy their shares

Whether David Badiell's father had a sex change op I don't know.

Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

I think I have managed to email my father's Hertford 1964 slides to Julian! I think. And now I can't remember however I did it! My mind has gone blank with the sheer mouse-clickiness and complication of it all. Time for strong cup of coffee.

I do hope they are melded together in a file and sent as an attachment. I couldn't bear to be beaten and not manage this computer task. Felt that I'd probably be marked "Could try harder"!icomefromalanddownunder wrote:Angela Woodford wrote:I think I have managed to email my father's Hertford 1964 slides to Julian! I think. Caroline, remember you had said (re the Immaculate Conception) that you had not been paying attention in Confirmation Class? DR would, in fact, be proud of you! Had you not bestowed the most Biblical advice upon me following my facial scarring?
Psalm 25:5
"Thou hast anointed my head with oil"
I think it's improving too!
Lots of love

I Knew Something was Wrong with the Marge
Katharine has revealed that
The breakfast marge was mixed with cod-liver-oil!!!
Don't you remember it had a strange taste and unnatural lustre? Now the truth has surfaced. Thank goodness Katharine had access to the kitchens when doing D of E. Now we know.
Yuck! Yuck!

Breakfast marge
Mixed with cod liver oil???
I wonder why? I do hope it was for its health benefits and not for any strange penny-pinching reason.
Did we get it all the year round?

Well, I now take high dose cod liver oil capsules every day (for making joints supple), given that I am arthritic. I can't taste the CLO except on the very rare occasions when for some reason or other I get some 'feedback' after I have had my breakfast. It may not taste brilliant but I don't think it does anyone any harm. Perhaps it was forward thinking of the Governors/Council of Almoners to make sure our joints were supple in winter? I know it was DRW herself who decided to give us oranges so that our Vitamin C intake was appropriate, to fight infection.
I remember queuing up for the malt extract on the long spoons (luvverly), and also for the senokot tablets which we learned to tuck into our cheeks and then spit out onto the back garden. When I gave my FD address in Scotland last year, I expressed surprise that no senokot trees popped up in those flower beds. It raised a laugh. With regard to queuing up in the cloakroom for treats, my most special memory is of fresh white bread, spread with thick dripping and sprinkled with salt. Not a very frequent treat, but one which I both enjoyed enormously at the time and have never been able to replicate. Neither have I been able to replicate the very special taste of CH marmalade spread on CH fried bread.......Another exquisite memory.

I don't think we used the flower beds in 6s, but we certainly didn't swallow them - what did we do? We had them the first three Saturdays of each term, as far as I remember.kerrensimmonds wrote:I remember queuing up for the malt extract on the long spoons (luvverly), and also for the senokot tablets which we learned to tuck into our cheeks and then spit out onto the back garden. Ah memories, memories! Did all houses cut the bread in the same way? In half across the length, then into quarters then into slices?kerrensimmonds wrote:With regard to queuing up in the cloakroom for treats, my most special memory is of fresh white bread, spread with thick dripping and sprinkled with salt.
