Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox (or something else?)?
What does CH use at the moment? Am guessing Internet Explorer as they loathe any form of non-conformism...

For the benefit of those like me who have just about mastered switching their computer on how would one access Mozilla Firefox?
Most computers seem to come up with internet explorer, certainly those I use anyway.

yep, the school use explorer! you can get firefox from downloading it (not that we could do that anyway) ***** IT nerds

I used to use IE and get too many nasties per week even though I run 3 different anti virus / trojan / other nasty programs in background (and despite the firewall claiming to repel 1.1 million attempts last year). When I switched to Firefox the number of bugs fell to maybe 2 per half year. The reason seems to be that viruses are not written for Firefox.
Get it by down-loading; it is free to use at least by individuals and charities.
The interface is almost identical to IE - no problems in using it. AFAIT it pulled over my IE favourites which was useful but ......
a) if you use the Google toolbar you will probably have to download their "Firefox" one (it is free)
b) Microsoft html is (allegedly) not industryu compliant so just a few bits don't work with Firefox. As an example, although you can get as far as booking tickets you cannot pay Ryanair! However, such problems are very very rare.

I use both - Firefox is very user-friendly, and doesn't suddenly close on you
but some site do not come up correctly, and require IE, because of the HTML codes.
I particularly like the multitabs in Firefox, the password saver and Page Info tool.

I have used Firefox and Thunderbird for some time, as I have an instinctive dislike for monopolies.
Firefox was indispensible for getting the Old Blue together as you can download, for free, a thing called FIREFTP, which allowed me to get access to the server of Sunset Design, who put together the Old Blue (password controlled, naturally).
I got all documents together in word format, then linked in to the Sunset server, where they had set up an Old Blue file, and transferred across the files. They worked on them, put them into Quark format, as used by the printers, and then I picked them up and transferred them back to my pc.
And so on until we had a final version.
I could find nothing similar for IE, that was both free and worked.
The only problem with Firefox is that it won't work fully with some airline and hotel booking forms, and also Mcafee antivirus for downloading, but otherwise it is great and far less likely to be attacked by viruses.
If you're disillusioned with Bill Gates, try OpenOffice, a wordprocess package with all you want, which also produces PDF's, unlike Word. Free as well. Interprets and saves in most formats, including Word, with no distortion, at least, not that I have noticed.
The great thing about both Firefox and Openoffice, is that you download what you need, and add patches as required.

I think it was Open Office which was mentioned in the Ethical Consumer Guide as a Microsoft alternative.
Mozilla at home, IE in work. Am assuming this is the same for most people.

Nope, I have both in both places ( I DO like to keep my options open...) plus Netscape available in case of time-warp...
Which reminds me that lovely daughter is doing the Rocky Horror show in L'pool on the 21st - and I can't go ( sob)

about 20 people on his course have gone, were suppossed to be going to a big design show but dont think theyre going to bother with that now!

It's free to anyone, even for commercial use. Just in case you were wondering.
Though if you want to install it at work, check with your IT department first. I'd hate to be accused of encouraging unapproved software. Again.
