The French seems to have overrun your system, today, Laura! The circumflex sits neatly (but unnecessarily) on the "o" whilst I think we have a redundant "e" and a missing "l".

Do the French have such a word? Given that the circumflex often denotes a missing "s", I cannot think what the etymology might be. I think I will stick to the English usage - "droll".

Well, there we are! Your French lessons obviously did have a considerable impact upon your developing mind. Even so, I will stick to the English usage!
