Is it right to ban things like scenes of Tom and Jerry smoking? I know there was a time when the pc brigade said they were too violent, it seems...here we go again!

I was astounded when I saw this on the news yesterday.

So hitting a mouse over the head with a frying-pan is OK, but Tom can't enjoy a cigar !

It's all bollox !

On the ONEshow tonight was a piece from California where they have banned smoking on Santa Monica beach, though you can still smoke on the promenade behind the beach (for now) and a town 30 miles inland where smoking is banned completely except in private homes.

At the University where I work there is a new total ban on smoking inside buildings (even the one 'smoking room' on each campus has been closed). The outside bins (with ashtray lids) have been moved at least 4 metres away from any entrance, to stop smell and smoke wafting inside when the doors are open.
Then I went to the local Sainsbury. Their sandtray-topped bins, for people to douse their cigarettes in before entering the store, are right next to the swing doors to get in...............

and a good thing too! I'm 10 minutes from Santa Monica and so it is my local beach. It's a beautiful beach but very busy in the summer. I don't want to be walking around in a load of cigarette butts. Allowing smoking on the promenade isn't crazy though, as there are plenty of trash cans for people to dispose of them in and, for the most part, people are fairly responsible about doing so.
