I have watched the activity on the forum tonight with mounting frustration. Though itching to participate, the fact is I have had a bad attack of Posters Block - being unable to write anything for fear it might change my status from a simple soul - a mere Grecian - to the buttoned variety, who clearly have nothing better to do with their time.
Like death itself, the next stage is inevitable. However, I thought I should mark this important rite of passage in my life with a little ditty. So here it is:
How many buttons does a buttoned Grecian get?
How many buckles on his belt?
How many lovers in his life are there yet?
And how many hurts has he felt?
Buttoned Grecians must
Be invariably just
Whether young, whether old or in between
Buttoned Grecians should
Be incredibally good
And never under influence be seen.
How many thoughts must a buttoned Grecian think?
How many postings must he pen?
Over how many threads must he pause to spread his ink
And will he have to do them all again?
To verify these facts
We must follow in the tracks
Of those who’ve made the journey heretofore
And so I do propose
To examine all of those
Who at this point have reached the highest score.
Leading us by far is that copper (ex) JR
Who would have as all to think that he is tough
Yet plays footie with the girls (never thinking of their curls
Or other things - unmentionable stuff!)
But give us down and outs or immigration louts
He would lock ‘em up or hang ‘em at stroke
And those who seek asylum he suggests that we beguile ‘em
Then send ‘em back before they make us broke.
And next there’s little Plummy with his pretty wife so yummy
And his applish little avatar so round
There’s something very sweet, something small and kind and neat
Within his plummy postings to be found.
Three thousand soon and rising, is not really so surprising
When they mostly are so very, very short
Yet his piccolo can still, rise to a little trill
When passion serves to penetrate his thought.
And so we come to Mary, our English Angel-fairy
The only girl with buttons down her front
So erudite and wise, she cuts us down to size
With her comments never crude or coarse or blunt.
But, with all her sense and reason, if you catch her out of season
She will speak of things we men should never hear
You can hear the playground snickers, when EA describes the knickers
That the girls at CH Hertford used to wear.
Next (fourth upon the list), comes RR (a little pissed
From drinking far too late within the Bax)
Inevitably charming with a smile that’s quite disarming
Reminding us of horticulture facts.
The problem is his name, which really is a shame
For us who seek a word to rhyme with Ruck
Unable to resort to the word which springs to thought
The writer of this verse is somewhat stuck.
And so we come to Taylor (I wish he were a sailor
We might the midnight watch together keep,
And gazing at the moon, we might sing a shanty tune
To a little forum ditty, so to speak).
He has guided us this far, so I think he is the star
That keeps us Forum fellows on our course
Without him we might founder, or burst our threads asunder
And lose a very valuable resource.
How many buttons shall this buttoned Grecian get?
And how many keys must he press?
How many postings on this forum has he set?
And how many more – shall we guess?
He must follow on the road
Which the others here have trod
And remember that his words will pass away
But the moment now has come
When to stop and say “’tis done!
One thousandth posting finished! So ….. hooray!â€

DBTS - if that's you with poster's block I'd love to see you in full flow! I bet you could write the sequel to War & Peace!

Just had a thought, DBTS, will you write an extra verse for each new Button Grecian?

I suppose I should really.

But only if I am allowed to get progressively more impolite as one BG succeeds another!
But then of course, I can always be bribed to be nice .......
