The Rev Porteous was also there at the time of the merger, and had a daughter in Col B (?) - Vonny would probably remember her. And we also had a deaconess, Sheila Banyard (nicknamed Barnyard, not terribly witty or original, but there you are) for a time. I (and a few others) went to stay with Gary Dobbie in the summer of 1990 in Hereford. I found the photos recently - oh, the dewy-eyed freshness of youth (or something). It was the first time I had ever heard 'Derek and Clive', aka Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore, and remember thinking this was unusual listening material for a man of the cloth. I am no longer of that opinion. I also remember that he roasted a chicken with a ton of garlic shoved up its rear end. We must have smelt/smelled so fragrant.

Oh yes - forgot about these two! I do vaguely remember a daughter - actually, was her name Sidonia or something similar?

Sidonia Porteous
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1666732/ as a production runner on a film in 1998. Might this be her? No picture unfortunately.

Probably is - can't imagine too many people sharing her name!

In my time at Hertford the two Reverends Walker were dubbed 'Ancient' and 'Modern'.
Not sure if Revd. Walker Junior is still extant - though as recently as three years ago I knew that he was a bridge player with Betty Jukes.

I seem to remember reading in a recent copy of one of the mags from CH that he had died. Not the latest one but the one before (mag that is)

Can't see his name in either of the 2 Old Blues published so far. Must have been earlier.

We will probably now get a post from someone who knows him saying that reports of his demise are exaggerated.

Don't worry Mary. I am pretty certain that 'Modern' must by now have gone to meet his Maker. Which says quite a bit about us in terms of age, given that I remember both him AND his dad, ministering to us at Hertford.

Godfrey Hall, Ian Atkinson and John Robson in the 70's at Horsham. Hall and Atkinson were both Housemasters and taught proper subjects as well as 'Divinity'. Hall taught English, at least to the junior forms as he was my form master in the second form; Atkinson taught Latin, again possibly only to the junior forms. Atkinson was also an officer in the Army section of the CCF - only bearded British Army officer I've ever met who wasn't a Sikh (or SF)!

He's still got a beard. A very formal and upright character. He is Chair of the Caledonian Old Blues and I met him at their Founder's Day Lunch last month.

When I was at CH there were two priests (Father Dobbie and Rev Murdoch) and a deaconess (Kate Powell? - possibly the only person to find singing Happy Birthday to Jesus offensive when sung at a Christmas meal!)

Rev Murdoch was only at CH for 2 years - he had 6 unspeakably gorgeous children including amazing blonde haired twins on my year... *swoons*

After he left, the Mitras have been the chaplains.

Mr Howard (and Mrs?) are both readers iirc...
