Just heard someone on Radio 4 talking about elections for the Mayor of London. He said that London was probably the third most important capital in the world. What is the second?
We came up with probably Moscow or Beijing, but which? Do you have other ideas?

Important capitals in no particular order:
Beijing - most populous country, future major economic power
Washington; currently most powerful country and the most willing to enforce its will by violence and economic blackmail like the attack on the international banking system in today's papers
Moscow: one of the largest countries in the world, probably still powerful, nuclear and with control tendencies
Brussels - capital of the most populous economic power at present
City of London: major financial centre
New Delhi - populous nation, growing economic power
Yes - I have missed out several -
Djakarta (population);
Jeddah (oil power);
Tokyo (still an economic power);
Abuja - (most populous nation in Africa, possibly most corrupt nation);
Canberra - because "she" thinks they are important

(oh, and they are big and the south has some spectacularly big barbies)
In setting an order of importance the station has to be diplomatic, not saying which he/she thinks are the first two. If pressed I suspect he/she would diplomatically name Washington (grovel at TB's feet) and Brussels (grovel at Mandelson's feet).
just my two eurocents worth - ie too small to be worth anything
Interesting; there are two Londons and the London of which the Lord Mayor is the boss is the 11th largest economy in the world (or bigger) despite being about one square mile. The other London squanders what the City earns.
The radio person doesn't say which London he/she is referring to - diplomatically again!

Pasties are evidently the most important foodstuff ever invented by man.

Agreed! As someone who was born in Treliske Hospital I couldn't have said it better myself!

You must be one of the few who got out alive--a friend was taken ill on holiday in Cornwall, and insisted on being brought back to Barnstaple rather than go to Treliske

I agree that the commercial ones vary between terrible to atrocious. They seem to use mechanical meat, all soft and slimy and overcooked veg.
However, get one with a decent bit of skirt, potato, swede (or is it turnip) etc. properly prepared in the old Cornish manner by a Cornishwoman who knows what she's doing and it's bliss except....
the last one I had looked normal size but it was so filling I couldn't finish it!
I can get the contents just about right with none of that commercial slime but I still can't get the fold in the top right; mine come out all sorts of shapes!
