Hmm. It all depends on context, I think. Our youngest very rarely sees anyone of colour here in Devon. When we recently visited the south-east I caught her looking at a person of African/Caribbean ethnic origin and noticing the difference in skin colour. She didn't comment. So what I'm saying in a very roundabout way, is that 'Steve' would not look out of place here in the South-West, and represents the majority of this population's ethnicity.

The majority yes, but have you been in Barnstaple lately?
I used to work with a (white ) woman married to a West Indian, at a time when the immigrant population in that part of London was almost vanishingly small. Once her first child started to talk she got most embarrassed when she took him out, as every man he saw with a black face was loudly greeted as "DADDY".
With regard to 'Steve' what's wrong with him the way he is?

Connection too slow to access the story, but with that incredibly blond hair and those blue, blue eyes, could Steve possibly be short for Stefan, rather than Stephan?
