So now that Wimbledon is behind us, we can all look forward to the British Open currently on its second day at Royal Birkdale.
pretty nasty conditions though, but look who is on top of the leaderboard...the Great White himself...Greg Norman. He must be getting a helping hand from his new wife, Mrs Chris Evert!! (nice link from Wimbledon don't you think?) Anyway still early days yet but for a 50 +something he's showing the youngsters that he can still bite.

I know Nick Faldo called it the British Open the other day, but surely it is just THE Open, original and greatest, like Wimbledon and THE FA Cup. (Link to the upcoming footie season there too)

I think you are right but I double checked and found this. My bust!
Outside the UK, the tournament is generally called the "British Open", in part to distinguish the tournament from another of the four majors that has an 'open' format, the U.S. Open, but mainly because other nations with similar 'open' format golf events refer to their own nation's open event as "the open." The PGA Tour refers to the tournament as the British Open[1], as do many media outlets in the United States, such as SportsTicker and the Associated Press.[2][3]
However, in the United Kingdom and a fair portion of Europe, the tournament is known colloquially as The Open. The tournament's website[4] uses only this name.

I know Sandy Lyle had a hissy fit yesterday but I think the conditions have made it far more interesting.
Nobody is running away with it as Tiger has been known to do in various tournaments around the world and almost any one of them could win it or conversely fail to make the cut.
Good to see Greg Norman striking a blow for those older ones amongst us and mention of Chris Evert reminds me of my youth.
I've never been a great one for fancying women in the public eye but she was an exception.

I'll second that, Andy. A real treat to watch in the early 80s, especially when you are a young pubescent in an all boys school!

My wife saw Martina in Oxford Street on one of our recent visits this year and says she is enormous. This may be a reflection on my wife, who is 5' 4", but that said, she made a lasting impression.

I think you will find these modern tennis players ARE enormous. The shortest of the Eastern europeans is about 5'10". I was watching Greg Norman come off the course with his arm round his wife and she barely came up to his armpit, now I know he's tall....

Chris Evert is 5'6" and a quarter. Billie-Jean King is only 5'4" and a half.

I really hope Greg has a good day today and wins.
No spring-chicken in his 50's, and an ambassador for the sport.

And he won! And well done to Podraig too, we were rooting for him, partly because #2 daughter has just been on a 2 week residential course in Irish, which is a fiercely difficult language, but a requirement if she is to get a fulltime permanent teaching job over there.
