I have just returned from the Kitchen, after making 12 Hotcross Buns,
This has taken about about an hour and a half, to mix knead, roll, rise and bake for 15 ninutes
(Stoving over a hot Slave !)
It struck me that in the Blessed Tescoids at this time of year they are about £1.20 for 6.
It may not be economical --- but I like to do it each year, and "The Commandant" allows it --- in fact she allows me to do quite a lot of the cookng, especially for Parties.
What do other OBs do ? do you get to the Supermarket, for Easter Goodies, or Christmas Cake ?
I have to confess that at Christmas , I have a Cousin , who is a Turkey Farmer, So I usually order a Goose, from her, to avoid "Freebies " -- which can be embarrassing !
What do you do ? do you look on the Kitchen, as a chore, or a blessing ?--- the same applies to the Supermarket !

Cheat on the bun-making. Use the bread machine to make the dough. Delicious!

The kitchen is a chore if pressed for time a blessing if not.

Any form of shopping is a chore ALL of the time!

In Tesco last night, mass produced hot cross buns, as NtN says £1.20 for six BUT buy one get one free. At the bakery (still in Tesco), fresh baked hot cross buns (i.e. still hot) 30p for six. No contest.

Usually buy 'em.

We forgot this year, so it's back to the shops tomorrow before footy !

I confess to using a Bread Machine, for making Bread (and also Pizza dough ) but for other Baking, there is nowt to beat getting your fingers in ----------to rub butter into flour !

Reminds me of the 'Kit-Kat' joke !

EA is, as ever, perfectly correct, the Blessed Tescoids banging them out at 6shillings per half dozen, and EA is also absolutely right in stating no contest!!

This probably accounts for the fact that you're enjoying your kitchen ventures, but for the rest of us it's a daily slog!! I love cooking, I love having house guests, the whole nine yards but sometimes I could just set fire to the kitchen and set up a standing order with Pizza Express. Especially this morning when HWMBI went off to Southampton to race to Cherbourg and back over the Easter weekend, no problem there except for the fact, which he concealed until very late last night, that due to the high tide times, the race started at 8 this morning, which meant him being on the boat at 6 this morning, which meant leaving the house at 5 this morning, which meant breakfast being served at 4 this morning. Not sure even PE would have helped me out with that one!!

But delicious. I got a bit heavy handed with the syrup glaze, so the ones I made this morning are best eaten in the bath!

Discovered too late that Finland doesn't have hot cross buns, so frantic text to Kirri who flew in yesterday with a dozen, so if we are inundated with Finnish in-laws this weekend we can introduce them to this strange English tradition. They seem to call most buns 'pylla'; Hanna's favourites are referred to as pink cakes, so when we found 'Easter cakes' in her favourite Sunny Cafe with yellow icing and green grass, they became yellow pink cakes! Yesterday she met the Easter bunny at school and had an Easter egg hunt, followed by friends in to play just as Kirri and Steve were arriving, plus Grandma's chocolate cake and the result was that she was horribly sick first all over her own bed, and then her parents', so we have spent most of Good Friday trekking up and down to the communal washing machine in the basement, and trying to find places to drape wet bedding. All the excitement is finally catching up with her!
