Block crosswords

When we were on holiday we had a free newspaper daily. This had an American crossword in it, which had far fewer black squares than a normal crossword. For example the top left corner might have a 5 by 5 block of white squares giving you a total of 10 5-letter words, 5 down and 5 across. John enjoyed doing these and I wondered about buying him a book of similar ones, but don't know what they are called. They were fairly easy clues not super difficult.

Any ideas?

According to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossword, they are called "American style crosswords".

Thanks Mary, I did not think of wikipedia. I only described them as American as they obviously had been imported from there (American spelling). I had not realised that it was an American style of crossword.

No, sorry, I'm still suffering jetlag. I intended it to be in non-CH. Profuse apologies, Sir.

I didn't know they were called that. I thought of "barred crosswords", googled for that, and found the reference to "American style" crosswords.
