Seriously though, I can't think of any time when I would need to use a service like that. There's normally someone who knows someone who knows someone who will probably have someone's number!

nor any of mine or husband's, I did hear about this on the radio last night.

I don't even know my own number so I don't see how anyone else can. I only use a pay as you go phone for emergencies!

There was a piece on Working Lunch about this the other day - the Marketing person from the company who's running it was on, trying to sell it as a huge benefit, and she was given a very hard time.

They get your number from details being sold on by other companies. To be fair, they won't be giving your number to callers, but they will ring you and ask if you want to accept a call from the person. I can see how it would be useful, but I think there are two issues with it:

1) If you agreed to your details being passed on for marketing purposes aeons ago, then this is a completely different use of your details and, as such, I would have thought it contravened the DPA. But then I'm not a DPA expert.

2) Junk phone callers can start off being very plausible. I can imagine them telling the Directory service that they have to speak to you about something, and giving a plausible sounding person's name rather than a company name. So you accept the call in good faith, only to have your time wasted. Still, at least it's only your time - they won't be given your number.

It was quite funny on Working Lunch, when they did a quick summary at the end of the programme, they said people were emailing in droves to find out how to opt out of the Directory. I don't think the Marketing woman had convinced anyone!

I think you may be right, but the Information Commissioner's Office appears to disagree. Then again, the ICO is notorious for not doing its job.

The exact terms of any agreement would matter, though.

I have a vague recollection from when I first signed up to Orange, a surprisingly long time ago. I seem to remember a question on the form about whether I wanted to be in the directory or not. I thought it a little odd at the time since they had no way of adding me to the book anyway.
