My DS is a second former and is freezing in his housey. Does anybody have some tips for staying cosy? Can he wear gloves and a hat with his uniform?

My lads wear T-shirts or long-sleeved vests under their school shirts for extra warmth if it turns chilly. They do take gloves and hats to school with them to wear while they're outdoors between lessons, but they always manage to lose these within a few days - buy cheap ones!!

thermal underware ?

Navy woolen gloves, a navy scarf (perhaps 5 foot long, knitted and double so he can also push the end in and wear it as a hat as well as going round his neck), thermal underwear as JR suggests and also a positive attitude. The first two will not clash with uniform.

If you convince yourself that it is cold outside and hunch up, tense the muscles etc then you will feel cold. Stay relaxed and you don't feel it so much. Try not to stand still - movement helps. The sensitive areas are the small of the back, the back of the neck and the scalp; keep those warm and you will feel warm. (Incidentally you lose almost 90% of body heat through the scalp).

I found the most useful thing was an extra blanket - we used to get ice inside the dorms at times!

We used to have --and I still do -- a Double-knitted CH Scarf --and we used to wear them as hat and scarf combined.

Are they not still sold, in the School Shop ?

I seem to remember mentioning elsewhere on this forum that when the girls first moved to Horsham in 1985 they very quickly demanded (and got) the right to wear housey coats because they were so much warmer than their newly designed short jackets.

I still have mine, although a little moth-eaten nowadays.

You used to separte the two woolen sides a one end, poke them inside to form a tube which made a very warm head-dress. not unlike the 'beany' hats worn by some today !

Yes, NEILL! I sent a tenner and a big jiffy bag to The Great Plum and he kindly acquired one for me - knitted, I believe by Plum Maman.

It's really warm and cosy, and converts into a hat-and-scarf, exactly as JR describes. If it carries on being this damp and cold here in Devon, I shall be utilising the scarf in this manner and reporting it in the "What Do You Wear In Bed?" thread.

They sell the school scarfs in the tuck shop (well they did last winter !) I've got one to wear to work.

This thread name made me smile as yesterday morning, around 6a.m. I was laughing like an idiot and thinking of old school days as my other half and I got dressed under the bedclothes as I used to do at Hertford. (New central heating still not installed in new house!)

One legacy of CH is that it has to be very cold for me to feel it or want the heating on.

The downside is that the wife and daughters don't feel the same way!

What a revelation - I always thought that Housey coats were so warm!

I have the same problem except that I believe it is a combination of Housey and standing on the slope at the Valley.

What sort of heating do the Houses have?

At Hertford, always a rush at break for the best position sitting on the Dayroom radiator!

A Lakeland catalogue has just been delivered. I was excited to see a splendid chocolate coloured electric fleecy throw, with nine heat settings! Ideal in which to huddle to do one's prep, I thought.

Sitting on radiators? Beware 'floating kidneys'!! (see elsewher on this forum!).
