Submissive wives

A curate in Kent has told Women they should be submissive to their husbands, and the Rector of the same church has allegedly distributed a leaflet saying that women "should remain silent" if questions " could legitimately be answered by their husbands".

Discuss (if you dare!)

It's a ruse to encourage more men to go to church? He's a relative of C.S. Lewis? His church is called St. Paul's & he's taking it a bit too literally? He's nuts?

This guy needs to realise that not everything that is in the Bible was said by God. All the examples quoted in the leaflet were actually things said by St Paul, who started life as a pretty nasty piece of work, and even after his conversion made some fairly inflammatory statements, definitely more Pauline than Godlike! It is a quite common failing for people to quote things which they claim as the words of Jesus when they were in fact the words of Paul - after all he did write more of the New Testament than Christ did!! However I do not expect to hear the clergy making this kind of error! I have a bit of a vested interest in this discussion because some years ago I was licensed as a Reader but, after moving away from the parish and then returning, the (male, of course) vicar will not allow me to be relicensed or even to preach occasionally; I sometimes wonder if he has been converted in the meantime to following the Gospel according Paul, but I think not because all sorts of other totally untrained women are even allowed to lead services.

Genesis 2 v 18 (NIV) says 'The Lord God says 'It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.' Helping someone (in my opinion anyway) does not mean submitting to them; it means working alongside them.

Discuss.

Don't worry Andy, husband read that, choked on his porridge and hurriedly moved on to the Indy.

One wonders what the wives of these men are like.

or even absolutely fabulous hats?

"1 Corinthians 11:5 (King James Version)

But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven."

I'm afraid St Paul, is always being quoted by people interpeting his "Recorded " sayings, to their own purposes !

An Example is "Women should keep silent in Church".

TBA says that if this was taken literally she could never have been a female missionary --- bring 'em all home !

It came about because, in the Jewish tradition women were in a separate part of the Synagoug, from the men --- and were inclined to chatter a bit (Sorry --- but true !) about more important things than the dissertation on the Talmud.

We have to realise that the Gospel and the Acts were "Edited" by the Church Authorities in the first few centuries, after Christ and any dissention was HERESY, for which you could be burned !!!

Creationist believe in Genesis 1 literally. If you had been Moses 3000 BC would they have understood the "Big Bang" ?

It was the best story of the Creation, suitable for the times --- somewhere in the Proverbs it states "God reveals to man, that which he wants to reveal" --- which is why scientific discoveries are made in each Generation !

I am, I hope, the best Christian I can be, and I keep trying -- but as an EX Scientist, I look on the story in Genesis -- as just that !

TBA believes that I am the "Head of the Household" but we always discuss Projects and Activities, but if there is a decision to be made --- she puts her view, but defers to mine, if we can't agree---
I would NEVER describe TBA as a "Submissive Wife " -----

This could be an interesting thread !!

Woe is me! Never mind praying and prophesying - I have preached with my head uncovered! Some years ago there was an altercation in our church between an elderly staid female member of the congregation and one of the youth group, a lad of about 14, who always wore a baseball cap including in church. Doris muttered but never approached him 'face to face'! Eventually I pointed out to her that he probably had no idea what he was doing to offend her, but that if she expected him to remove his hat in church, to be consistent then she herself should be wearing a hat. She hadn't a clue what I was talking about. It turned out that in her mind men should remove their headgear when indoors; the fact that it was a church was totally irrelevant. I had a quiet word in the lad's ear, explaining that some people found it offensive for a man not to uncover his head in church; it was a custom he had never heard of before, but he was happy to comply in future.

An afterthought ........... am I, as a Christian, expected to submit in all things to the will of my husband who regards the Bible as a fairy story?
